Chapter 6 - The Curtains Pulled Back on the Secret Heir

The morning sun filtered through the massive arched windows of the grand library where Evelyn sat reviewing ledgers.

Across the manicured courtyard below, two plain moving vans were swallowing what remained of William’s private wardrobe.

Claire had spent the prior evening locked in a guest room hysterically calling high-society associates for a loan.

Not a single one of her former cocktail companions or aristocratic patronesses answered her frantic, sobbing voicemails.

Society in this town was brutally pragmatic; once the ducal coffers dried up, the invitation lists closed instantly.

William stood on the gravel driveway in a wrinkled linen shirt, carrying two modest leather suitcases by hand.

His hands were blistered, unaccustomed to performing manual labor after four decades of unquestioned aristocratic indulgence.

A sleek black town car pulled into the motor court, stopping right beside the sputtering moving van.

Out stepped Dr. Harrison Sterling, the chief obstetrician of the exclusive private maternity hospital in Manhattan.

Claire emerged from the side entrance of the manor, her designer sunglasses failing to hide her swollen, reddened eyes.

When she saw Dr. Sterling walking across the crushed gravel with a brown leather briefcase, her knees visibly buckled.

“Dr. Sterling?” William asked, dropping his suitcases into the dust as hope flared briefly in his exhausted eyes.

“Did you come regarding Claire’s care? We are simply having a temporary logistical relocation to our secondary townhouse.”

Dr. Sterling did not return the Duke’s customary handshake; his expression remained strictly professional and detached.

“I am not here to arrange private nursing, Mr. Carter,” the doctor said, pointedly omitting the ducal title.

“I am here on direct subpoena from the federal probate court and the Vanguard board of directors.”

Claire lunged forward, her voice rising into an uncontrolled, shrill panic that startled the movers loading furniture.

“Harrison, no! You took an oath of private physician-patient confidentiality! You cannot speak to them!” Claire screamed.

Evelyn descended the exterior marble staircase with measured steps, flanked by Julian Vance holding a manila folder.

Sophia, Clara, and little Lily stood at the balustrade above, watching the spectacle with quiet, disciplined observation.

“Confidentiality does not shield criminal fraud against an estate trust, Claire,” Julian Vance declared with sharp finality.

Julian unclipped a thick stack of medical files, certified blood analyses, and encrypted communication logs.

“Duke Carter, your entire rationale for repudiating your legal marriage was the guaranteed arrival of a male heir,” Julian began.

“Claire Whitmore presented you with clinical ultrasound records showing a healthy male fetus at fourteen weeks.”

William nodded rapidly, looking wildly between Julian, Claire, and the silent, grim-faced physician.

“Yes! She gave me the son Evelyn denied me! It is a boy! The Carter bloodline will survive!” William shouted.

Dr. Sterling sighed heavily, taking off his gold-rimmed spectacles and looking directly into William’s manic face.

“Mr. Carter, the ultrasound images you were provided were stolen from a private fertility database in Dallas,” Dr. Sterling stated.

“Miss Whitmore underwent an elective non-invasive prenatal test at my clinic twelve weeks ago.”

“The child she is carrying is medically confirmed to be female.”

The gravel courtyard fell into a silence so absolute that the rustle of autumn leaves sounded like gunfire.

William stood frozen, the color draining from his features until his skin resembled cracked marble.

“A… a girl?” William whispered, his voice cracking like dry wood snapping under an unbearable weight.

“No, that’s impossible… she promised me… she showed me the medical documents signed by the clinic…”

“Those documents were forged by Claire’s brother, who runs a bankrupt printing agency in New Jersey,” Evelyn stated calmly.

Evelyn walked down the final step, her heels clicking cleanly against the pavement until she stood before Claire.

“You played him like an amateur, Claire,” Evelyn said softly, her eyes piercing through Claire’s crumbling defense.

“You knew William was so pathologically obsessed with having a boy that he wouldn't verify the laboratory credentials.”

“You thought that once you secured the wedding ring and the title, the truth wouldn't matter anymore.”

Claire shrank back, her haughty veneer disintegrating into raw, humiliating tears of absolute ruin.

“William, listen to me!” Claire sobbed, grasping at the Duke’s lapels with desperate, trembling fingers.

“It doesn't matter if it's a girl! We can try again! We can build our own family away from her!”

William looked down at Claire’s hands on his jacket as if they were venomous snakes coiling around him.

His chest heaved violently as the colossal weight of his own profound stupidity crashed down upon his soul.

He had banished Evelyn, the brilliant woman who saved his finances and raised three magnificent daughters.

He had publicly disgraced his family name, lost his estate, and surrendered his fortune for a total fabrication.

“You lied to me,” William growled, his voice trembling with a mixture of disgust, horror, and profound grief.

“I gave up everything for you… I threw away my true daughters for an heir that never existed…”

May you like

“You didn't throw them away for an heir, William,” Evelyn interrupted, her voice cutting through his self-pity.

“You threw them away because of your own fragile ego, and now you have neither an heir nor a home.”
