Chapter 5 - The Duchess Reclaims Her Throne

The headlines the next morning exploded across every financial paper and gossip tabloid in the entire country.

“DUKE OF ASHBOURNE BANKRUPT AT THE ALTAR: EX-WIFE OWNS THE ENTIRE ESTATE.”

The photographs of Claire screaming at the altar and Sophia standing poised in blue were splashed everywhere.

Reporters camped outside the iron gates of Ashbourne Manor, watching the chaotic collapse unfold in real time.

Inside the grand drawing room, Claire was pacing frantically, throwing crystal vases against the stone fireplace.

“You promised me an empire!” Claire screamed at William, her eyes red and swollen from crying all night.

“You told me Evelyn was nothing but an abandoned housewife who depended on your family name!”

“Now the bank says our credit cards are canceled, and my accounts have been completely frozen!”

William sat on the floor near his desk, his hair disheveled and his military uniform stained with spilled whiskey.

“I didn't know…” William muttered like a broken man, staring blankly at the polished floorboards.

“She set a trap for me from the very beginning… she waited for years to pull the rug out from under me…”

Before Claire could scream another insult, the front doors of Ashbourne Manor opened with quiet authority.

Evelyn Carter stepped into the foyer, flanked by her legal team and two private security details.

She wore a sleek black tailored suit, her dark hair pinned up with understated perfection, commanding the room.

Behind her walked her three daughters, laughing among themselves as if visiting a familiar weekend playground.

Claire froze, staring at Evelyn with an expression of pure, unadulterated hatred and rising terror.

“Get out of my house!” Claire shrieked, pointing a shaking finger toward the entrance.

“I am the Duchess of Ashbourne now! I am carrying the Duke’s only male heir!”

Evelyn paused, looked at Claire with mild amusement, and slowly took off her black leather gloves.

“This has never been your house, Claire,” Evelyn said, her voice dripping with effortless elegance.

“And as of midnight yesterday, it is no longer William’s house either.”

Julian Vance stepped forward, laying a certified eviction warrant and ownership title directly on the table.

“Duke Carter, Lady Claire, you have exactly two hours to collect your personal clothing and vacate the premises.”

“Every piece of art, every piece of silver, and every vehicle belongs to Vanguard Continental.”

William looked up from the floor, his eyes meeting Evelyn’s with a desperate, pathetic plea for mercy.

“Evelyn… please…” William whispered hoarsely, crawling forward slightly on his knees.

“We were married for ten years… you cannot throw me out into the street like an animal…”

“Think of the Carter name… think of our history together…”

Evelyn looked down at the man she had once loved, feeling nothing but a profound sense of closure.

“I did think of our history, William,” Evelyn replied, her tone completely devoid of anger.

“I remembered how you humiliated our daughters in front of the entire estate council.”

“I remembered how you threw them out into a rainstorm because their gender didn't satisfy your vanity.”

“You told me I failed this family because I gave birth to three brilliant girls instead of a boy.”

She turned toward Sophia, Clara, and Lily, who were watching their father without a single drop of pity.

“My daughters are not failures,” Evelyn stated, each word landing like an executioner’s blade.

“They are the future owners of every company you ever claimed to represent.”

Claire broke down sobbing, sinking onto the sofa, finally realizing that her grand ducal dreams were shattered.

William stared at the floor, the bitter taste of utter defeat choking the breath out of his lungs.

He had traded a brilliant, empire-building partner and three loyal daughters for an illusion of patriarchal pride.

And now, left with empty pockets, a ruined reputation, and a mountain of debt, he had nowhere left to go.

Evelyn turned to her security detail and gave a simple, decisive nod.

“Pack their bags,” Evelyn commanded softly, turning her back on William forever.
