Chapter 3 - The Ultimatum and the Breaking Point

The confrontation escalated rapidly after that afternoon, culminating in the surreal ultimatum delivered in the penthouse. Andrew, completely under Kerri’s spell, had summoned Callie to the living room as dusk fell over the city. He didn't ask for an explanation; he delivered a sentence.

"Kerri's doctors confirmed it today," Andrew had announced, his voice carrying the detached coldness of a corporate board meeting. "Her kidneys are failing. She needs a donor immediately, and her family matches have all fallen through. You're a universal match—your medical records from our annual checkups proved it."

Callie had stared at him, wondering if the man standing before her was a stranger wearing her husband's skin. "You want me... to donate my kidney? To your ex-girlfriend?"

"Don't call her that," Andrew snapped, stepping into her personal space. "Kerri is innocent, and she's paying the price for your quiet hostility. The stress you've caused her accelerated her condition. It’s the least you can do to make amends. Think of it as your duty as my wife—cleanse your conscience."

The audacity was staggering. It wasn't a request; it was a demand backed by the full weight of his financial intimidation and social dominance. He genuinely believed that Callie existed to serve his life, his regrets, and his chosen priorities.

Instead of screaming, instead of weeping as Andrew expected, Callie felt a profound, terrifying calm settle over her bones. The internal fire that had kept her warm during three years of neglect suddenly flared into a roaring blaze of absolute clarity. She realized that she had been kneeling before an altar built of glass, praying to a god made of stone.

Without a word, Callie turned on her heel, walked to the mahogany secretary desk in the corner of the living room, and opened the velvet-lined drawer. She pulled out a crisp, pre-printed legal document—one she had had drafted quietly by her family’s elite legal counsel just forty-eight hours prior, anticipating that the end was near.

She walked back to Andrew, holding the papers out with steady, unflinching hands.

Andrew frowned, glancing down at the bold heading at the top of the page. PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE.

"What is this?" he scoffed, though a flicker of unease danced in his amber eyes. "Another one of your dramatic tantrums? Callie, put that away. We are discussing Kerri's life."

"No, Andrew, we are discussing my freedom," Callie said, her voice cutting through the evening air like a surgical scalpel. "You want to play the savior to a woman who despises me? You want a wife who sacrifices her body for your past regrets? Consider yourself released from your obligations. And consider me entirely gone."

Before Andrew could process the words, Callie dropped the papers onto the marble coffee table, turned away from him, and walked out of the penthouse without looking back.
