Chapter 4 - The Next Morning: Headlines and High Society

The sun rose over New York with a brilliant, blinding intensity on Wednesday morning, casting a golden halo over the spires of Midtown. In his high-rise penthouse, Andrew woke up with a lingering sense of irritation. He assumed Callie had retreated to the guest bedroom to sulk, nursing her bruised pride before inevitably returning to her routine of quiet compliance. He poured himself a black coffee, fully expecting to hear the soft padding of her slippers on the marble by seven o'clock.

Seven-thirty came and went. The penthouse remained deathly quiet.

Frowning, Andrew walked down the hallway and pushed open the door to Callie’s private dressing room. It was spotless—too spotless. Her jewelry tray, usually cluttered with the modest pieces he had gifted her over the years, was completely empty. The walk-in closet, which should have been filled with her designer coats and evening gowns, held only a few empty hangers swinging gently in the draft from the open window.

A knot of unease tightened sharply in Andrew's chest. He pulled out his phone and dialed her number.

The number you have dialed is no longer in service.

Panicking, Andrew rushed to the living room and grabbed the remote, turning on the financial news network that droned quietly in the background every morning. He expected market updates, real estate forecasts, or corporate mergers. Instead, the morning anchor’s face filled the screen, framed by a breaking news banner that made Andrew’s blood run cold.

BREAKING: JON ENTERPRISES ANNOUNCES NEW GLOBAL CHAIRPERSON — THE MYSTERIOUS HEIRESS STEPS INTO THE LIGHT.

The screen cut to high-definition footage captured outside the majestic neoclassical headquarters of Jon Enterprises—a multinational conglomerate holding billions in global assets, real estate holdings, and technological infrastructure. For decades, the Jon family had guarded their privacy fiercely, operating behind a impenetrable wall of trustees and legal shields. Rumors had swirled for years about the reclusive billionaire patriarch, Julian Jon, and his elusive granddaughter who was slated to inherit the entire empire.

And there, stepping out of a sleek black Rolls-Royce flanked by a phalanx of private security, was Callie.

She was no longer wearing the muted, understated pastel dresses Andrew had bought her to blend into his background. Instead, she wore a tailored crimson pantsuit that screamed quiet authority, her golden hair swept up into an immaculate chignon, and a pair of diamond-encrusted earrings that caught the morning light like twin stars. She didn't look like the submissive, neglected wife who had walked out of his penthouse the night before. She looked like royalty.

The anchor’s voice boomed through the silent penthouse: "Miss Callie Jon, sole granddaughter of founder Julian Jon, has officially assumed full operational control of the conglomerate following her grandfather’s retirement. Analysts predict a massive shift in Manhattan’s real estate landscape as Jon Enterprises prepares to launch a multi-billion dollar urban renewal initiative..."

The phone dropped from Andrew's paralyzed fingers, shattering against the marble floor with a sharp, hollow crack.
