Chapter 6 - The Re-encounter: A Glance Across the Boardroom

Two weeks had passed, and the power dynamic of Manhattan real estate had undergone a seismic shift. Jon Enterprises had launched a massive, aggressive acquisition campaign, sweeping up distressed commercial assets across the financial district. Word on the street was that the new chairperson, Callie Jon, was ruthless, brilliant, and completely impervious to corporate flattery or backroom deals.
Andrew Vance found himself on the losing end of three major development bids in a row. His once-thriving firm was suddenly starved for capital, as major investors quietly withdrew their backing after realizing Andrew had alienated the most powerful player in the city. Desperate to salvage his collapsing empire, Andrew managed to secure an invitation to the exclusive quarterly gala hosted by the Manhattan Developer's Association—an elite gathering where Callie Jon was scheduled to deliver the keynote address.
The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of glittering chandeliers, expensive champagne, and tuxedo-clad elites. Andrew stood near the back, nursing a glass of scotch he had barely touched, his eyes fixed relentlessly on the elevated stage.
When the mahogany double doors at the side of the stage opened and Callie walked out, the entire room seemed to hold its breath.
Gone was the quiet, submissive woman who used to help him adjust his tie before business dinners. In her place stood a queen. Callie wore a backless midnight-blue velvet gown that shimmered under the spotlights, her posture regal, her expression an unreadable mask of absolute confidence. She didn't look left or right; her eyes scanned the room with cool, detached authority.
As she took her place behind the podium, her gaze swept across the crowd—and momentarily locked onto Andrew.
Time seemed to freeze. For three endless seconds, the noise of the glittering ballroom faded into a dull hum. Andrew felt his breath catch in his throat. In that single, searing glance, he saw no anger, no bitterness, and no lingering affection. Worse than hatred, there was absolute indifference. She looked at him the way an executive looks at a minor accounting error on a balance sheet—insignificant, forgettable, and already dismissed.
Callie delivered her speech with flawless eloquence, outlining Jon Enterprises' vision for the future of urban development, emphasizing integrity, transparency, and absolute zero tolerance for manipulation or deceit. Every word felt like a calculated indictment of everything Andrew had become.
When the applause erupted into a deafening roar, Callie stepped away from the podium, flanked by two towering corporate security guards. Ignoring the cluster of wealthy CEOs rushing forward to shake her hand, she walked straight down the central aisle toward the exit—passing within inches of where Andrew stood rooted to the floor.

As she drew near, Andrew could no longer hold back. The suffocating weight of his regret burst through his chest.
"Callie..." he choked out, his voice trembling as he took a half-step forward, his hand extending instinctively. "Callie, please... just five minutes. Let me explain. I was blind... I was a fool. I realize now... I’m in love with you. I've always been in love with you."
