Chapter 10 - Ambush in the Pines

The headlight beams swept through the dusty windows of the cabin.

“They found us,” Gregory whispered, his hand instantly going to the shotgun resting against the wall.

“How?” Lyra asked, closing the ledger quickly.

“Silas has trackers. And I’m too old and slow to have cleared our trail properly,” Gregory muttered, his face grim. “Get under the floorboards, Lyra. Now.”

“No,” Lyra said, her voice fiercely stubborn.

“Lyra, do as I say!” Gregory commanded, his voice cracking like a whip.

She looked at him, seeing the love and fear in his eyes, and realized she couldn't let him die for her.

She slid into the space beneath the floorboards, pulling the wood back over her head just as the front cabin door was kicked off its hinges.

The sound of gunfire was deafening.

Through the cracks in the floor, Lyra saw the flashes of muzzle fire.

She saw Gregory firing his shotgun, sending one of the intruders crashing backward through the window.

But there were too many of them.

A heavy boot slammed onto the floorboards right above her head, sending dust showering down onto her face.

“Where is the brat?” a voice roared.

“Go to hell!” Gregory screamed, followed by the sound of a brutal struggle.

A dull thud echoed, and Gregory’s heavy body hit the floorboards right next to where Lyra was hiding.

He was alive, but he wasn't moving.

“Search the place!” Silas’s voice commanded from the doorway. “And find that ledger!”
