Chapter 14 - The Trap is Sprung

Inside the vault was a small, stone room.

In the center, on a pedestal, was a metal box.

Silas pushed Lyra aside, rushing toward the box.

He tore it open, expecting to find millions of dollars in certificates and land deeds.

Instead, the box was empty except for a small, tape recorder and a single piece of paper.

Silas’s face went pale.

“Where is it?” he roared, turning on Lyra. “Where is the money? The deeds?”

Lyra stood at the entrance of the vault, her face completely calm.

“My father didn't keep his money here, Silas,” she said. “He kept his justice here.”

She reached over and flipped a heavy iron switch on the wall beside the door.

A loud, metallic clang echoed through the quarry as a heavy steel grate slammed down over the entrance, trapping Silas inside the vault.

Through the bars of the grate, Silas stared at her in horror.

From the tape recorder inside the box, a voice began to play.

It was Roman’s voice.

“If you are hearing this, Silas, it means you betrayed me, and my daughter has survived to bring you here. The ledger you hold is fake. The real one was sent to the federal authorities three hours ago. Your empire is already gone.”

Silas screamed in rage, throwing himself against the steel bars, but they didn't budge.

The sound of police sirens began to wail in the distance, echoing off the stone walls of the quarry.
