Chapter 4 - The Theater of Lies

The following week became the most grueling performance of Daniel’s life. Every morning, he woke up next to a woman he now despised, forced to smile, to touch, and to whisper sweet lies about their future. He told Vanessa he would marry her the moment the divorce from Claire was finalized. He watched her bloom with greed, her confidence swelling like a cancer.
At the office, the air was thick with betrayal. Marcus, the CFO, was perpetually hovering, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Daniel went through the motions of his role, pretending to suffer from debilitating migraines, feigning memory lapses, and “accidentally” misplacing critical files.
One afternoon, he signed a document in the presence of his board—a seemingly benign “medical power of attorney” form that Marcus had provided. It was a trap, meant to strip Daniel of his decision-making authority. As he signed it with a special pen provided by Claire—a pen that digitized everything he wrote—he felt a surge of grim satisfaction.
That evening, he arrived home to find Vanessa pacing the living room. “Everything is in place, Daniel. Marcus has the board ready for Friday. Evelyn is going to be there to provide the ‘testimony’ we discussed.”
“And if she refuses?” Daniel asked, his voice level.
“She won't,” Vanessa sneered. She didn’t know she was being recorded. “I’ve already told her: she says what I wrote, or she spends the rest of her life in the most miserable nursing home in the state. She’s too old and too frightened to fight back.”
Daniel watched as she walked away, her heels clicking on the hardwood floor like a countdown clock. Upstairs, he hid in the bathroom and sent a quick, encrypted message to Claire: She’s moving on Friday. She has the nursing home threat on record.

Claire’s response was immediate: Good. Everything is locked in. Don’t look at me during the meeting. Just sign the final papers they put in front of you. Once you sign, the trap snaps shut.
He looked at his reflection in the mirror. He barely recognized the man looking back. He was hollowed out by regret, but focused by a singular purpose: he would dismantle everything Vanessa and Marcus had built, and he would ensure they never touched his family or his company again.
