Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Coup

The boardroom was colder than usual. The air was charged with a mixture of nervous energy and the heavy silence of corporate intrigue. Daniel walked in, looking disheveled and pale. He took his seat at the head of the table, his hands trembling—a performance that made Marcus smirk at the other board members.

Vanessa sat in the back, her eyes shining with triumph. Beside her, Evelyn sat with a look of quiet, stoic resignation.

“We have an emergency agenda today,” Marcus announced, standing up. “Due to the CEO’s recent health struggles and his inability to manage the firm’s assets, we have a motion to transfer operational control to the board-appointed committee.”

He gestured to a stack of documents in front of Daniel. “Daniel, if you would just sign the transfer of signatures?”

The room went deathly still. Daniel looked at the papers. They were the culmination of months of fraud, deceit, and cruelty. He looked at Vanessa, who was beaming. He looked at his mother, who gave him a tiny, almost imperceptible nod.

He picked up the pen. His hand didn't tremble. “Is this what you want, Marcus?”

“It’s what’s best for the company, Dan,” Marcus replied, his voice dripping with false empathy.

Daniel signed.

The scratch of the pen on the paper felt like a gunshot in the silent room. Marcus grabbed the papers, his face alight with victory. “Thank you, Daniel. You’re excused. Security will escort you out.”

But the doors to the boardroom didn't open for security. Instead, they swung wide to reveal Claire, walking in with two men in dark suits—the lead financial crimes investigators.

“I’m afraid that’s not going to happen,” Claire said, her voice clear and resonant.

Marcus stood up, his face reddening. “Claire? What is this? You don’t have a seat on this board.”

“I don’t need one,” she said, placing a thick folder on the table. “I am the Independent Protector of the Family Trust. And as of this morning, I have frozen every account associated with your shell corporation, and I have filed a notice of criminal fraud with the district attorney.”

The color drained from Marcus’s face. Vanessa stood up, her jaw dropping. “What? You can’t do that!”

“Actually,” Claire said, a cold light in her eyes, “I can. And I did.”
