Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

The chaos that followed was beautiful. Marcus lunged toward the table, desperate to retrieve the documents, but the investigators were already moving. The room, which moments ago had felt like a boardroom, now felt like a cage.

“You’re under arrest, Marcus Vale,” one of the officers said, the cold snap of handcuffs ending the CFO’s career in an instant.

Vanessa, realizing the trap had closed, turned to bolt for the door. She was met by two more officers. “Vanessa Miller, you are also under arrest for conspiracy to commit fraud, assault, and forgery.”

Vanessa’s facade shattered. She began to scream—a shrill, desperate sound—accusing Daniel of everything from incompetence to abuse. She looked for sympathy from the board members, but they were already turning away, their faces masks of professional disgust.

Daniel stood up, his gaze steady. He watched as they dragged the woman he had chosen over his own wife out of his office. He watched the man he had trusted like a brother get shoved into a police cruiser. He felt no pity, only a hollow relief.

Evelyn walked over to him, leaning on her cane. She hugged him tightly. “You did the right thing, Daniel. You came back to us.”

Daniel looked at his mother, then at Claire. Claire was standing by the window, her phone in her hand, coordinating with the legal team to ensure that the damage to the company was contained. She looked like a general surveying the aftermath of a war.

“Is it over?” Daniel asked.

Claire turned to him. The fire in her eyes had dimmed, replaced by a deep, weary exhaustion. “The company is safe, Daniel. The legal side will take months to resolve, but the takeover is dead. You’re in control again.”

“And us?” he asked, his voice barely a whisper.

Claire didn’t answer immediately. She walked past him, heading toward the door. She stopped, but didn't turn around. “The company is safe. That’s what I promised I would do.”

She walked out of the room, leaving him standing in the center of the wreckage, surrounded by the silence of the life he had fought to save, but was now utterly alone to face.
