Chapter 5 - The Eye of the Storm

Thursday was the longest day of Daniel’s life. He felt like a man walking toward an execution, though he was the one holding the ax. Claire had been working behind the scenes, her movements invisible but absolute. She had obtained a secret injunction, frozen the shell corporation’s assets, and coordinated with a team of financial crimes detectives who were now embedded in the periphery of his life.

At the office, Marcus was practically vibrating with excitement. He kept dropping by Daniel’s office, asking if he was “feeling up to” the board meeting. Daniel played the part of the frail, overwhelmed CEO perfectly, clutching his temples and staring blankly at the wall.

“I just want this over with,” Daniel mumbled, looking at Marcus with unfocused eyes.

“It will be, Dan. It will be,” Marcus said, a predatory glint in his eye.

Meanwhile, at the townhouse, Claire was finalizing the last of the legal documents. She had prepared a dossier so damning that it would not only end the hostile takeover but also lead to prison sentences for both Marcus and Vanessa. She sat in her study, surrounded by the remnants of the life she used to share with Daniel—a photo of a trip to Italy, a ticket stub from a concert they had attended years ago.

She didn't let herself feel the nostalgia. She was a lawyer, a protector, and she had a job to do. She knew that as soon as this was over, she would be gone again. She couldn’t stay in the orbit of a man who had doubted her so easily, even if he had finally seen the light.

That night, a message pinged on Daniel’s phone. It was from Vanessa: Tomorrow, your company becomes ours. Get some rest, darling. You’ll need it to sign the transition documents.

Daniel showed the message to Claire. For the first time in years, a genuine smile touched her lips. It wasn’t a smile of warmth, but of absolute triumph.

“Let her collect it,” Claire said. “Every bit of it. Let her think she’s holding the crown, just before we pull the rug out from under her.”

The stage was set. The board meeting would start at 9:00 AM. The detectives would be waiting in the parking garage. The evidence was filed with the state prosecutor. All that remained was the final, fatal move.
