Chapter 3 - The Ledger of Blood and Algorithms

The heavy mahogany doors of the estate library clicked shut, sealing out the damp night air and the nervous whispers of the remaining security staff. Nathan paced the length of the Persian rug, his leather-soled shoes striking a restless rhythm against the floorboards. In his hand, he held the cracked leather ledger Ruth had retrieved from the estate’s deepest vault—a subterranean archive that even he, the sole heir and CEO, had never been permitted to enter.

"Read page one hundred and twelve," Ruth instructed, standing beside the mahogany desk with her arms crossed.

Nathan flipped the heavy, yellowed pages. The handwriting was meticulous, drafted in black fountain pen ink that had bled slightly into the cotton paper over the decades. It was a formal partnership agreement dated November 14, 1984, signed by two men: Elias Archer and Silas Bennett. But across the signatures, someone had scrawled a jagged, violent red X in industrial grease pencil.

"The predictive behavioral engine," Nathan read aloud, his eyes widening as he scanned the technical specifications. "This... this is the exact foundational code for the Archer Meridian neural network. The software that controls global shipping logistics, predictive market trading, and automated defense systems. It's worth four hundred billion dollars today."

"And your father, Richard Archer, stole every line of it," Elias said, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper. The old man looked smaller now, stripped of the terrifying armor of his wealth and prestige. "Richard wasn't the visionary the tech magazines claim he was. He was a gambler, a thief, and a coward. When Silas refused to sell his share of the company to the defense contractors in Washington, Richard panicked. He forged Silas's signature, cleaned out our corporate accounts, and when Helena discovered the theft in this very library... things went too far."

Claire stepped closer to the desk, her fingers gently brushing the edge of the ledger. For eleven months, she had cleaned this room, dusted these bookshelves, and polished this exact mahogany surface without knowing that her family’s blood and genius soaked into the wood. Her grandfather had never mentioned the stolen company; he had only spoken of betrayal as a sickness that poisoned the soul of anyone who tried to profit from it.

"Why hire me, Nathan?" Claire asked, turning her dark, piercing eyes toward the billionaire. "Out of all the employment agencies in New York, out of all the applicants vetted by your corporate security team... why did you choose the granddaughter of Silas Bennett?"

Nathan stopped pacing. He stared at Claire, his chest rising and falling heavily. "I didn't choose you," he confessed, his voice dropping an octave. "My executive assistant handled the hiring. But three months ago, right before I finalized the merger with Cross Global Industries, I started receiving anonymous digital packets containing encrypted fragments of this exact ledger. Someone inside this house—or connected to it—has been pulling my strings, forcing me to look into the past."

"It wasn't an accident that you hired her, Nathan," Ruth said, a grim, satisfied smile crossing her lined face. "The universe doesn't deal in coincidences when debts are this old. Silas Bennett’s blood returned to this house to collect."

Before Nathan could demand to know who sent the encrypted files, a sharp, metallic crash echoed from the hallway outside the library. Someone—or something—was moving through the darkened corridors of the Archer estate.
