Chapter 6 - The Confession of Arthur Cross

Within forty-five minutes, the red-and-blue strobe lights of federal law enforcement vehicles painted the grand white pillars of the Archer estate in harsh, flashing neon. Special agents from the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission flooded the grounds, securing the perimeter, seizing the estate's central servers, and slapping industrial-strength titanium handcuffs on Vivienne Cross as she was dragged screaming toward a waiting black SUV.

Nathan stood on the grand stone portico, watching the motorcade disappear down the winding oak-lined driveway. The cold autumn wind whipped through his dark hair, but he felt a strange, light-headed sense of liberation. The multi-billion-dollar merger with Cross Global was instantly voided, dissolved under emergency federal anti-corruption statutes triggered by the recovered ledger and Vivienne’s armed trespass.

Inside the grand foyer, Ruth was pouring steaming cups of black coffee from a silver pot. She handed one to Elias, who sat slumped in a leather armchair near the warmth of the hearth, and another to Claire, who stood quietly by the window, her gray uniform uncreased despite the violent confrontation.

"Your father called me five minutes ago," Nathan said, walking back into the foyer as he pocketed his secure satellite phone. His face was grim, but his eyes held a new clarity. "Richard Archer is currently being picked up by federal agents at his villa in Palm Beach. When they raided his home, he didn't even try to run. He just asked if Silas Bennett was still alive."

Elias took a slow sip of the coffee, his hands no longer shaking. "What did you tell him, Nathan?"

"I told him Silas passed away three years ago in Colorado," Nathan replied quietly, his gaze resting on Claire. "And I told him that his granddaughter is currently running this household better than he ever ran his life."

Claire turned away from the window, meeting Nathan’s eyes across the marble floor. There was no servile deference in her posture now; she stood as an equal—a woman whose heritage was woven into the very foundations of the empire Nathan commanded.

"My grandfather didn't hate your family, Nathan," Claire said softly, breaking the heavy silence. "He hated what greed did to men who forgot where they came from. He spent forty years in the mountains not to hide, but to ensure that the Stillwater discipline wasn't used for conquest. He knew that one day, truth would find its own way back to the surface."

"It didn't just find its way back," Ruth muttered, adjusting her wire-rimmed glasses as she walked past with a stack of legal documents. "It knocked on the front door with a silver serving cart and caught six crystal flutes."

A faint, genuine smile touched Claire’s lips at Ruth’s dry remark. But the shadow of the past still hung heavy over the estate, and there was one final secret buried in the deepest vault that neither the ledger nor Vivienne’s confession had fully explained.
