Chapter 7 - The Secret Vault of Room 404

The steel door of Room 404 did not appear on any architectural blueprint of the Archer estate. Located deep beneath the foundation of the West Wing, past the wine cellars and the modern server racks, it was sealed behind a massive three-foot-thick circular vault door that required both a biometric iris scan and an analog four-digit mechanical combination—a combination that only Elias and the long-dead Richard Archer were supposed to know.

At 2:00 AM, the heavy steel mechanism groaned with the sound of grinding gears as Nathan entered the four numbers Silas Bennett had scrawled on the final page of the cracked leather ledger: 1-9-8-6.

The massive door swung inward with a heavy hiss of pressurized air, releasing the scent of old paper, cedarwood, and dried lavender.

Nathan stepped inside, holding a high-intensity tactical flashlight ahead of him. The beam cut through the absolute darkness, illuminating rows of metal filing cabinets, vintage magnetic tape reels from the early days of computing, and dozens of framed oil portraits wrapped in protective canvas.

Claire followed closely behind him, her rubber-soled shoes making no sound against the concrete floor. Elias remained upstairs by the fire, his strength spent, leaving the final discovery to the two descendants whose fates had been bound together by history.

"Look at this," Nathan whispered, shining his light toward the center of the room.

resting on a heavy oak trestle table was a massive, custom-built mainframe terminal from the mid-eighties—the original prototype of the Stillwater Predictive Engine. Beside it sat a neatly stacked pile of personal journals bound in black calfskin.

Claire walked over to the table and picked up the top journal, blowing a thin layer of dust off the cover. The embossed gold letters read: Helena Bennett, 1985.

"My grandmother's handwriting," Claire murmured, her fingers tracing the embossed letters with reverent tenderness. She opened the cover to the first page, reading silently in the pale beam of Nathan’s flashlight. Her eyes grew wide, and a sharp intake of breath hissed through her teeth.

"What does it say?" Nathan asked, stepping closer until his shoulder brushed hers. The proximity sent a sudden, electric jolt through his nervous system—one that had nothing to do with corporate espionage or multi-billion-dollar algorithms.

"She didn't just write code, Nathan," Claire said, her voice trembling slightly. "She wrote an insurance policy. She knew Richard Archer and Arthur Cross were planning to steal the company and frame my grandfather for corporate sabotage. On the night she died... she didn't come to the grand ballroom to attend a party. She came here to lock the master encryption keys away where no court order or bribe could ever touch them."

Nathan looked down at the open page. Scrawled across the bottom in Helena’s bold, uncompromising hand was a final sentence that changed everything: “If you are reading this, my blood has returned to claim what was never lost. The code belongs to the world, but the house belongs to the Stillwater.”
