Chapter 4 - The Intruder in the West Wing

Nathan’s hand instinctively dropped toward his hip, though he wore no weapon. As the CEO of a multi-billion-dollar security tech firm, his residence was supposed impenetrable—a fortress guarded by biometric locks, thermal cameras, and elite ex-military patrol units. Yet the sharp, rhythmic tap of a booted foot outside the heavy library door suggested that their security perimeter had been effortlessly breached.

Claire moved before any of the men could react. Her body slid sideways with liquid fluidity, her hand slipping into the heavy fold of her gray maid’s uniform to draw a small, polished wooden practice baton—a tool her grandfather had insisted she carry every day of her adult life. She pressed her back against the wall beside the door frame, melting into the shadows with an economy of motion that made Ruth nod in silent approval.

The brass doorknob turned. Slowly. Deliberately.

The door swung inward, revealing the tall, elegant silhouette of Vivienne Cross.

She was no longer wearing her glittering engagement gown or her designer heels. Instead, she wore a sleek, tactical black cashmere turtleneck and form-fitting trousers. In her right hand, she held a compact, silenced Beretta semi-automatic pistol, its matte black barrel catching the dim moonlight streaming through the library's arched stained-glass windows.

Vivienne looked at Elias, then at Nathan, and finally let out a cold, melodic laugh that lacked any trace of human warmth.

"Well," Vivienne purred, stepping across the threshold with the absolute confidence of an apex predator who knew the traps had been disabled. "Family reunions are always so delightfully messy. I told my father we should have liquidated this estate twenty years ago instead of letting the old man rot in Colorado."

Nathan stepped in front of his grandfather, his eyes blazing with fury. "Vivienne. What is the meaning of this? Are you out of your mind? That’s a firearm—"

"Put the romantic hero act away, Nathan," Vivienne interrupted, leveling the silencer directly at his chest without a single tremor in her wrist. "Cross Global Industries didn't become your biggest competitor by playing fair. Your little tech empire is built on stolen sand, and my family owns the title deed to the beach."

Elias struggled to rise from his chair, his face contorted with rage. "Arthur Cross... you’re working for Arthur Cross. The man who funded my son Richard’s embezzlement in nineteen-eighty-four."

"My father is a very thorough man, Elias," Vivienne smiled, her eyes glittering with manic triumph. "He knew that sooner or later, you’d start feeling guilty on your deathbed. He knew you’d bring in someone from the Bennett bloodline to look at the old ledgers. That’s why we planted me in your grandson’s life twelve months ago. I was supposed to marry into the fortune, secure the master decryption keys, and lock the Archer archives forever."

She shifted her aim slightly, moving the black barrel from Nathan’s chest to Claire’s forehead.

"And you," Vivienne hissed, her teeth bared in a snarl. "You had to show off with your little martial arts trick in front of the board of directors. You ruined months of careful planning. Now, this wonderful estate is going to experience a tragic, accidental gas leak."
