Chapter 4 - The Anatomy of a Lie

The following two weeks were a masterclass in patient, methodical warfare. Zolani lived a double life. To the world, she was the grieving, disgraced wife, occasionally seen in public looking disheveled and tired. But behind the scenes, she was the surgeon of her own destiny. She tapped into the access codes her father had left behind, digging into the digital records of the hospital. She found the "missing" funds—millions of dollars diverted into shell accounts controlled by Darius and his mother, Gloria. He had been siphoning the hospital’s research budget to pay for his lavish lifestyle and to bribe board members.
She held secret meetings with the heads of cardiology and neurology—the people who had been sidelined by Darius’s cost-cutting measures. She didn't reveal her true identity yet. She simply asked questions. “Why is the equipment failing?” she asked the Head of Surgery. “Because Darius diverted the maintenance budget to the ‘Expansion Initiative’,” he admitted, his voice full of bitterness. “He doesn't care about the patients. He wants the prestige of a new wing to put on his resume.”
Zolani kept meticulous files. Every time Darius went on record, giving interviews about his "commitment to healthcare innovation," she was there in the shadows, comparing his words against the forensic financial data. He was so drunk on his own ego that he stopped checking his blind spots. He truly believed he had won. He even held a press conference to announce the final stage of his expansion, boasting about his "new vision" for the hospital. Zolani watched the livestream from her car, a small, sad smile playing on her lips. The taller the building, the more devastating the collapse, she thought.
