Chapter 7 - The Collapse

The fallout was instantaneous and merciless. By the following morning, the news headlines were dominated by the scandal. The "Hospital Expansion" was exposed as a massive, multi-million dollar fraud. The police, acting on the evidence Zolani had meticulously compiled, raided the hospital and Darius’s private office.
Darius was taken into custody on charges of embezzlement, corporate fraud, and obstruction of justice. His mother, Gloria, was hauled away for her complicity in the money-laundering schemes. Simone Vale, attempting to leverage her way out by offering to testify against Darius, was quickly shut down when Zolani produced the recording of their cafe meeting. Simone lost her nursing license permanently for her role in the extortion scheme.
Zolani walked through the ICU that afternoon. The same staff who had ignored her a month ago now stood in awkward silence as she passed. She didn't look for their approval. She went straight to the administrator’s office, the one Darius had occupied, and began the process of clearing out his personal items. She found a photo of their daughter, Ada, buried in a drawer under a stack of bribe ledgers. She clutched it to her chest, the weight of the past year finally beginning to lift. Darius had tried to paint her as unstable, but the courts had seen the truth. With the financial evidence and the proof of his domestic gaslighting, he had lost all rights to their daughter. He was now just a name in a file, a cautionary tale of what happens when you mistake kindness for weakness.
