Chapter 5 - The Gala of Glass

The Foundation Gala was the social event of the year, a glittering spectacle held in the grand ballroom of the city’s most prestigious hotel. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow over the donors, the board members, and the local elite. Darius stood on the stage, the center of the universe, holding a glass of champagne, his smile practiced and bright. Beside him stood Simone, draped in a designer gown that likely cost more than a staff nurse’s annual salary.

Zolani arrived just as the keynote address was about to begin. She chose a simple, midnight-blue silk dress—sharp, clean, and elegant. As she walked through the doors, the room fell into a sudden, awkward silence. Darius’s smile faltered, his eyes widening in alarm. He hurried toward her, his face flushing. “What are you doing here? You aren’t invited. Security!” he hissed, trying to drag her toward the exit.

“Don't touch me,” Zolani said, her voice cutting through the ambient noise of the crowd. She wasn't shouting, but her presence commanded the room. Solomon stepped up behind her, carrying a leather briefcase. “Mr. Mensah,” Solomon’s voice rang out, amplified by the microphone he had just tapped into. “Before you continue with your expansion, there is a mandatory legal reading required by the bylaws of Vantage Health Holdings.” The room buzzed with confusion. Darius looked like he was having a stroke. “This is a private, hospital-sponsored event!” he shouted. “Not anymore,” Zolani said, walking toward the podium with a grace that felt like a death sentence to her husband’s career.
