Chapter 11 - The Ashes of the Past

The sun began to crest over the eastern horizon, painting the industrial skyline in bruised shades of amber, violet, and steel gray. The railyard had been cleared; Leo and his surviving men were secured in the back of an unbranded transport van headed toward an undisclosed holding facility upstate, and the cleanup crew was methodically sweeping away the debris of the night's war.

Nico and Norah sat side by side on the tailgate of an SUV, watching the horizon in silence. A heavy, warm wool blanket draped over Norah’s shoulders, held securely by Nico’s arm wrapped around her waist.

“Arthur’s taking care of the remaining assets in the South Side,” Nico said quietly, breaking the stillness. “He’s liquidating the liquor import routes and transferring the accounts to a legitimate offshore trust. We’re officially getting out of the contraband game.”

Norah turned her head to look at him, her eyebrows raised in genuine surprise.

“Getting out?” she asked. “Just like that?”

“Just like that,” Nico confirmed, turning to face her fully, his dark eyes clear and unburdened for the first time in twenty years. “The penthouse is on the market. All of it—the security systems, the bulletproof glass, the iron gates. I’m done living in a fortress.”

“And where are we going?” Norah asked, a small, tentative smile touching the corners of her mouth.

“Wherever you want,” Nico replied without a single second of hesitation. “A house with a wraparound porch, a town where nobody locks their doors at night, somewhere far away from glass towers and bloodstained napkins. I want a real life, Norah. If you’ll still have me after everything I’ve put you through.”

Norah looked at him long and hard, searching for any lingering trace of the arrogant, guarded predator she had met in that crowded restaurant three years ago. She saw only a man who had walked through fire to earn his redemption.

“You’re going to have to learn how to cook breakfast, Nico,” Norah said softly, her eyes dancing with amusement. “And you’re definitely going to have to learn how to take out the trash yourself.”

“It’s a deal,” Nico smiled, leaning in and kissing her gently, the warmth of the touch washing away every ghost of their violent past.
