Chapter 7 - The Bullet That Changes Everything

The world fractured in a fraction of a second.
The heavy crack of the rifle bullet shattered the rear window of an idling bus ten feet behind them, raining safety glass across the asphalt. Nico’s instincts, honed by two decades of urban warfare, took over before his conscious mind could even register the threat.
“Get down!” Nico roared, diving forward and tackling Norah to the ground just as a second round ricocheted off a steel support pillar with a high-pitched whine.
Shouts erupted from the terminal as travelers scattered in blind panic, diving behind luggage carts and concrete barricades. Marco and the second enforcer drew their pistols instantly, sweeping their gazes toward the upper levels of the multi-story parking structure across the boulevard.
“Sniper on the north stairwell!” Marco yelled over the chaos, firing three rapid suppression shots toward the concrete opening three hundred yards away.
Nico shielded Norah’s body with his own, pressing her flat against the frozen ground behind the thick concrete fender of a baggage truck. The acrid smell of gunpowder hung heavy in the damp air.
“Are you hit?” Nico demanded, his hands frantically checking her arms and shoulders for any sign of blood.
“No—I’m okay!” Norah gasped, her eyes wide with shock as she stared at the shattered glass glittering on the pavement nearby. “Who is that? Who’s shooting?”
“A message,” Nico snarled, his face hardening into a mask of pure, predatory fury as he pulled his own sidearm from his shoulder holster with fluid precision. “Arthur warned me the South Side syndicates were getting restless after last night’s meeting. They didn't just want territory; they wanted to test my grip.”
“They followed you here,” Norah realized with a jolt of horror. “They tracked you to find me.”
“They thought you were my leverage,” Nico said, his voice dropping into a chilling, subterranean calm that was infinitely more terrifying than his anger. “They thought cutting my foundation would make me stumble. They’re about to find out what happens when the floor caves in entirely.”
Marco crouched low, sprinting toward Nico’s position while keeping his weapon trained on the parking garage.
“Boss! The shooter’s bailing! They’ve got a black sedan waiting on the lower deck headed toward the expressway!”
Nico looked down at Norah, his dark eyes burning with an intense, unwavering resolve. The romantic reconciliation was violently interrupted by the brutal reality of the world he inhabited, but the stakes had shifted irrevocably. She wasn't just a woman who had walked out on him anymore; she was the target of a faction trying to tear his empire apart.
“Can you run?” Nico asked her, his tone urgent but steady.
Norah looked at the smoking window of the bus, then up at Nico’s face—the grim line of his jaw, the absolute focus in his eyes, and the unmistakable realization that he would burn the city to ashes before letting anyone lay a finger on her.
“Yes,” Norah said, her voice firming up as she pushed herself up from the pavement. “I can run.”

“Marco, get her into the bulletproof SUV,” Nico ordered, standing up and cocking his weapon. “Lock down every exit between here and the downtown docks. Nobody moves a finger in this city tonight without my permission.”
As Marco ushered Norah toward the idling black vehicle parked near the terminal exit, Nico turned toward the parking structure, his mind racing through a mental inventory of every rival boss, disloyal underling, and ambitious upstart in the district. The war had begun, and there was no turning back.
