Chapter 12 - The Foundation of a New Life

Six months later, the coastal town of Oakhaven was waking up to a crisp, salt-scented morning. The Atlantic breeze rolled gently across the dunes, rustling the tall beach grass surrounding a sprawling, weathered-shingle house that stood atop a gentle slope overlooking the harbor.
Inside the sunlit kitchen, the smell of fresh coffee and toasted brioche filled the air. Nico stood at the marble island—a much warmer, simpler marble than the cold slabs of the downtown penthouse—wearing a simple flannel shirt with his sleeves rolled up to his elbows. He carefully plated two breakfast sandwiches, adding a sprig of fresh parsley with a degree of concentration usually reserved for financial ledgers.
Norah walked into the kitchen barefoot, wearing her old gray hoodie, her hair tied back loosely in a messy bun. She leaned against his back, wrapping her arms around his waist and pressing her face gently against his shoulder.
“Something smells incredible,” Norah murmured, closing her eyes as Nico turned around in her embrace, wrapping his strong arms securely around her.
“Masterpiece in progress,” Nico replied, kissing the top of her head. “Special recipe. Guaranteed better than anything you ever prepared outside a study.”
“That’s a low bar, Nico,” she laughed softly, looking up at him with a bright, contented smile. “Considering your previous culinary achievements consisted entirely of imported scotch and sliced fruit at two in the morning.”
“Past history is strictly confidential,” Nico grinned, pulling up a wooden chair for her at the dining table that faced the wide picture windows overlooking the sparkling blue ocean.
As they sat down together to eat, the morning light poured through the glass, illuminating a home built not on fear, surveillance, and reinforced steel, but on honesty, survival, and a love that had survived its own destruction. The phone on the kitchen counter remained silent, its screen dark, its number unknown to any syndicate boss or rival enforcer.

For the first time in his life, Nico looked across the table at the woman who had walked away and realized an absolute truth that required no lies to sustain it.
He didn't need a fortress to keep her safe. He only needed to be a man worth staying for.
