Chapter 9 - The Bait and the Trap

The sprawling industrial railyard on the southern docks was a maze of rusted shipping containers, towering gantry cranes, and deep shadows cast by flickering overhead halogen lamps. A biting wind rolled in off the dark river, carrying the smell of salt, grease, and ozone.

In the center of the gravel clearing sat a single black sedan, its headlights cutting blinding beams through the heavy river fog. Norah stood beside the passenger door, wearing her heavy dark coat, her breath forming white clouds in the freezing air. She was entirely exposed, a solitary figure in the middle of a war zone.

Two hundred yards away, hidden inside the corrugated iron shell of an abandoned warehouse, Nico knelt behind a stack of wooden crates with an assault rifle resting across his knees. Through the infrared scope of his weapon, he could see every movement in the railyard. Marco and twelve of his best men were positioned along the catwalks above, their rifles locked and loaded.

“She’s out there too long, boss,” Marco whispered through the comm-link embedded in Nico’s ear. “Leo’s sniper is probably zeroing in right now.”

“Let him try,” Nico murmured, his finger resting lightly on the trigger, his heart beating with cold, measured fury. “If he takes the shot, he exposes his position. And the second he moves, we end this.”

Down in the clearing, the grinding roar of an engine echoed across the gravel as three unmarked vans tore through the rusted gates of the railyard, their high beams flashing blindingly as they screeched to a halt in a semicircle around Norah.

Car doors slammed open simultaneously. Armed men poured out, brandishing submachine guns and shouting orders. In the lead stepped Leo Moretti—tall, lean, with a jagged scar running from his jawline to his collarbone and a cold, predatory grin stretching across his face.

“Well, well,” Leo called out, stepping toward Norah while keeping his weapon loosely pointed at the ground. “Nico’s favorite little secret. I have to hand it to you, sweetheart. When you walked out of that penthouse last night, you saved us the trouble of picking the locks.”

Norah didn't flinch. She kept her chin up, her voice entirely steady as she met Leo’s gaze.

“You think Nico cares that I’m here?” Norah asked, her tone dripping with calm defiance. “You heard what he said. I’m just inventory to him.”

“Save the tough act,” Leo laughed darkly, grabbing her arm roughly and pressing the barrel of his pistol against her temple. “If he didn't care, he wouldn't have spent the last twelve hours turning the entire city upside down looking for you. Call him out, sweetheart. Tell him to drop his weapons and walk into the light, or I’ll scatter your brains across this gravel.”

From his concealed position in the warehouse, Nico watched the scene unfold through the scope crosshairs. His finger tightened on the trigger. The safety clicked off with a soft, metallic snip.

“Nico!” Norah’s voice rang out clearly across the open railyard, carrying the exact instructions they had planned in the war room. “Don't come out! It's a trap!”

Leo struck her across the face with the back of his hand, sending her stumbling onto the gravel.

That was the exact moment the line snapped.
