Chapter 1 - The Shadow In The Hallway

The air in the sprawling Sterling mansion always felt ten degrees colder than the world outside. Tonight, that coldness was suffocating. Elena clutched her three-month-old son, Leo, tightly against her chest. Her heart hammered frantically against her ribs. Every breath she took felt jagged, painful, and laced with absolute terror. She backed away slowly, her bare feet making no sound on the imported marble floor. But she couldn’t escape the sharp, echoing clicks of high heels. Victoria was coming. “Don’t you dare hold him!” Victoria stepped aggressively toward Elena in the dark mansion hallway. The older woman's eyes were practically glowing with a manic, possessive fury. Elena immediately turned sideways, shielding the infant secured against her chest. The baby whimpered as Elena tightened both arms around the carrier. A faint, stinging red mark was visible on Elena’s pale cheek. It was a fresh reminder of the slap Victoria had delivered just minutes ago. “He’s afraid of you right now,” Elena whispered, her voice trembling but defiant. Victoria’s fury intensified. Her manicured hands balled into tight, shaking fists. She stepped closer, raising a hand as if to strike again. But footsteps suddenly echoed from the far end of the hallway. Heavy, rushed, and unmistakable. Nathan was approaching. Victoria immediately turned toward him, her vicious sneer melting instantly into a mask of victimhood. “Nathan, darling!” she cried out. “She’s trying to turn him against me. She won't let me see my own grandson!” Nathan said nothing at first. He stepped out of the shadows, his tall frame dominating the corridor. He studied Elena, who was shaking uncontrollably, protecting the frightened baby. He saw the tears in his wife's eyes. More importantly, he saw the glaring red handprint on Elena's cheek. He then locked eyes with Victoria as his expression hardened into cold steel. One sudden confrontation shattered Victoria’s confidence. The matriarch of the Sterling family took a step back, realizing she had miscalculated. For the first time in his life, Nathan wasn't looking at her like a mother. He was looking at her like a threat.
