Chapter 3 - The Shadow of Treason: A Six-Hundred-Million-Dollar Knife

The fragile, beautiful peace of that morning was a glass house, and by noon, Nathan Mercer threw a massive, jagged stone right through it.

I was in my home office when my private line began to vibrate violently across the mahogany desk. It was my Chief Operating Officer, and he sounded completely breathless.

"Daniel, turn on the financial news. Right now."

I grabbed the remote and clicked the screen on. My own face was plastered across the television, set against a glaring red chyron: HALE MERIDIAN IN CRISIS: BOARD CONSIDERS OUSTING FOUNDER AMID HOSTILE TAKEOVER BID.

Nathan hadn't just sold our highly confidential acquisition secrets to our fiercest rival. He had used the massive payout from that treason to secretly buy up voting shares through anonymous proxy firms. He was officially launching a hostile takeover of the empire I had built from my dorm room.

Worse, he had spent the last 48 hours leaking fabricated, highly damaging stories to the press, painting me as an erratic, isolated tyrant who was rapidly losing his grip on reality and tanking the company's future.

"He's calling for an emergency board vote tomorrow morning at 9 AM to strip you of your CEO title," my COO warned through the phone, the panic evident in his voice. "Daniel, I've run the numbers. He has the votes. He's been poisoning the well with the board for months behind your back."

The old Daniel Hale—the Ice King—would have felt a cold, calculating rage. I would have spent the entire night ruthlessly plotting to destroy Nathan's life, liquidate his assets, and ruin his reputation permanently.

But as I stood in my silent home office, I slowly turned and looked out the massive bay window. Down in the garden, Maria was chasing Lily across the manicured grass, the faint sound of their laughter bleeding through the thick, bulletproof glass.

I didn't want vengeance anymore. Vengeance was exhausting. I just wanted my company secure so I could figure out how to live in this new, terrifying, beautiful reality. My motivation had fundamentally shifted. I wasn't fighting out of hatred anymore. I was fighting to protect my peace.
