Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Massacre: Checkmate in 10 Minutes

I walked into the Hale Meridian Group headquarters the next morning with lethal, absolute precision. My tailored suit was flawless, my expression utterly unreadable.
The glass-walled boardroom on the 80th floor was packed to capacity. The air was incredibly tense, heavy with the scent of expensive cologne and impending doom. Nathan sat at the opposite end of the long glass table, right in my usual chair, a smug, arrogant grin plastered across his face. He thought he had me completely cornered.
"Daniel," Nathan sneered loudly as I walked in, leaning back and steepling his fingers. "So glad you could join us for your own retirement party. It's time for new blood."
I didn't sit down. I didn't raise my voice. I simply unbuttoned my suit jacket and placed a single, thick black leather folder directly in the center of the glass table.
"You always mistook my silence for ignorance, Nathan," I said, my voice dangerously calm, echoing off the glass walls.
I looked slowly around the room, making eye contact with every single board member who had plotted against me. "Nathan Mercer has acquired nineteen percent of our voting shares through shell companies over the last six months. However, he financed these purchases using offshore accounts tied directly to our rival's corporate espionage fund. That is a massive violation of the Securities Exchange Act. It is a federal crime."
Nathan's smug grin instantly vanished. The color drained rapidly from his face. He opened his mouth, but no sound came out.
"I have already forwarded the complete transaction ledgers to the SEC and the Department of Justice," I continued smoothly, tapping the black folder. "His shares are legally frozen pending a federal investigation as of five minutes ago. His vote is void. And if any of you wish to align yourselves with a man facing twenty years in federal prison, you may cast your vote to oust me right now."
The silence in the room was absolute. No one moved. No one breathed. The board members stared at the folder like it was a live grenade.

Nathan stood up, his chair scraping violently against the floor, his hands shaking with blind fury. "You're a monster, Daniel! You'll always be an empty, cold monster! You trust no one!"
I looked him dead in the eye, feeling absolutely nothing but pity for the man I used to call my best friend. "No, Nathan. I was empty. But I'm not anymore. Security will escort you out."
