Chapter 7 - The Paparazzi and the Flight: The Midnight Escape

We had finally found a rhythm. A quiet, beautiful rhythm of shared dinners and awkward crayon drawings. But my world was far too toxic to stay contained behind the gates of Westchester.

The next morning, Maria walked into the kitchen, her face completely pale, her hands shaking as she held up a tabloid newspaper.

Splashed across the front page was a blurry, highly zoomed-in photo of me, Maria, and Lily sitting in the dirt the day before, taken by a drone.

THE ICE KING'S SECRET FAMILY? RUTHLESS BIZ TYCOON DANIEL HALE SPOTTED PLAYING HOUSE WITH UNKNOWN WOMAN!

"The gate security just called," Maria said, her voice shaking violently, on the verge of a panic attack. "There are four news vans blocking the main entrance. Photographers are trying to climb the stone walls. Mr. Hale... they're digging into my past. They're going to find out about David. They're going to put his tragedy on the evening news."

I saw the absolute, primal panic in her eyes. The profound trauma of her husband's death was about to be dragged through the ruthless public square, entirely because she was adjacent to me.

"Maria, I will handle this. I will put a total legal media blackout on every major outlet—"

"No!" she cried out, stepping back from me as if I had struck her. "You can't control everything with lawyers and money, Daniel! This is exactly why we can't be here. We don't belong in this world. Your world destroys everything it touches!"

She turned and ran upstairs, leaving me standing alone in the kitchen, the silence rushing back in to suffocate me.

That night, I couldn't sleep. I paced my room for hours. At 2:00 AM, I heard it. The faint, unmistakable crunch of tires on gravel.

I rushed to the window and saw a yellow taxi idling in the long driveway. Maria was frantically loading two small, worn suitcases into the trunk, carrying a sleeping Lily wrapped in her coat.

She was leaving. She was actually leaving.

The terror that seized my chest was infinitely worse than any boardroom betrayal. I sprinted out of my room, flying down the massive marble staircase, my bare feet hitting the freezing stone as I ran out into the pouring, freezing rain.
