Chapter 5 - The Secret in the File: The Sins of the Father

With the company utterly secure and Nathan permanently out of my life, my first instinct was to ensure my home was an impenetrable fortress for the two people who had inadvertently saved my sanity.

I asked my head of security to run a standard, deep-level background check on Maria—not out of suspicion, but out of a sudden, desperate need to protect them from the inevitable media fallout of the corporate bloodbath I had just orchestrated.

When my security chief handed me the heavily redacted file that evening in my library, the horrifying reality of my past sins hit me like a runaway freight train.

I sat alone in the dark, the only light coming from the glowing screen of my laptop, staring at the pages in absolute horror.

Maria’s late husband, David Torres, hadn't just died in a random, tragic car accident like she had told the agency. He had taken his own life exactly three years ago.

He had been the brilliant, optimistic founder of a promising, small-scale medical tech startup. He had poured his entire life savings, and his family's future, into a revolutionary product. But before his product could ever reach the market, his supply chain was mysteriously choked out, his patents were aggressively challenged in endless, draining litigation, and his small company was mercilessly forced into bankruptcy.

He was crushed by a massive corporate raider who bought the scraps of his life's work for pennies on the dollar.

That corporate raider was Hale Meridian Group.

My company. My aggressive, ruthless acquisition strategy. My blind, unfeeling greed.

I dropped my head into my trembling hands, feeling violently ill. I had built a massive empire by destroying lives without a second thought, and my wealth had directly created the tragedy that left Lily fatherless. The universe had an incredibly cruel, poetic sense of humor.

I wasn't their savior. I was the monster who had ruined their lives in the first place.
