Chapter 2 - The Gilded Cage

The Russo estate loomed against the gray, turbulent Chicago skyline like a modern fortress. As the tinted town car pulled through the massive wrought-iron gates, I pressed my face against the cool glass, taking in the sprawling manicured lawns, the stone fountains, and the imposing architecture of glass and dark marble. It was a world that existed entirely apart from my reality of cheap instant noodles and double shifts. A team of stoic staff members was waiting at the grand entrance to whisk my meager duffel bag away. I felt entirely out of place in my faded jeans and worn-out sneakers as I stepped into a foyer that looked like the lobby of a five-star European hotel.
I was immediately escorted to the East Wing, which had been converted into a state-of-the-art medical suite. Mrs. Russo was resting in a massive four-poster bed, looking frail but peaceful. When she opened her eyes and saw me, a genuine, warm smile spread across her face. "You came," she whispered, reaching out a trembling hand.
"Your son is incredibly persuasive, Mrs. Russo," I replied softly, taking her hand and instinctively checking her pulse. "And you can call me Sophie."
Before she could reply, the heavy bedroom door swung open, and the temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. Two people walked in—a man and a woman in their late thirties, both dripping in designer labels and wearing identical expressions of sneering disdain. These were Antonio's older half-siblings, Marcus and Elena.
"So this is the little Florence Nightingale Antonio bought," Elena drawled, looking me up and down as if I were a piece of trash someone had tracked in on a pristine white carpet. "You look remarkably ordinary for someone who caused such a scene."
"I'm here to do a job, ma'am," I kept my voice professional, refusing to let her intimidate me. "Mrs. Russo needs her rest right now."
Marcus scoffed, adjusting his Rolex. "Don't get too comfortable playing doctor, sweetheart. Our mother has the best specialists in the country. You're just a glorified babysitter Antonio brought in to make himself feel in control."

As they turned and strutted out of the room, Mrs. Russo squeezed my hand tightly. Her eyes, suddenly sharp and filled with a hidden terror, locked onto mine. "Do not trust them, Sophie," she breathed, her voice barely a whisper. "The hospital monitor didn't just malfunction last night. Someone in this family wants me dead before I can change my will."
