Chapter 8 - Beyond the Wealth

Exactly one year to the day after that fateful shift in Room 714, I found myself standing in front of the Chicago Memorial Hospital once again. But this time, I wasn't arriving in a beat-up Honda Civic, fueled by cheap coffee and dread. I stood on a podium beneath a bright blue sky, the morning sun warming my face.

Beside me stood Antonio, his hand intertwined with mine, his thumb drawing comforting circles on my skin. Behind us was a massive, brand-new, state-of-the-art facility. The gold lettering above the entrance read: The Margaret Lawson Clinic for Low-Income Families.

"My grandmother always believed that no one should have to face their darkest moments alone, simply because they couldn't afford the light," I spoke into the microphone, my voice steady and echoing across the crowd of reporters and hospital staff—including a very shocked and humbled Marco. "Thanks to the generous endowment from the Russo Foundation, this clinic will ensure that no family in Chicago has to make a choice between their lives and their livelihoods."

The crowd erupted into applause, and as I stepped away from the podium, Antonio pulled me into a tight embrace, ignoring the cameras completely. "You did beautifully," he murmured into my hair.

"We did it," I corrected, looking up at him. "It wouldn't have been possible without your investment."

Antonio smiled, that rare, genuine smile that he reserved only for me. "I'm a businessman, Sophie. I calculate every risk and every return." He took my hand, leading me slightly away from the crowd, toward the exact spot in the courtyard where I used to sit and cry over my bills during my breaks. "But hiring the stubborn nurse who yelled at me was the greatest risk I ever took."

To my absolute shock, Antonio Russo, the most powerful man in Chicago, dropped down to one knee on the concrete walkway. He reached into his suit jacket and produced a velvet box, flipping it open to reveal a diamond ring that caught the sunlight, fracturing it into a million brilliant prisms.

"And it turned out to be the absolute best investment of my life," he continued, looking up at me with eyes full of unwavering love. "Sophie Lawson, you saved my mother, you saved my soul, and you gave me a reason to build a better world. Will you do me the absolute honor of becoming my wife?"

Tears spilled over my cheeks, but they were tears of pure, unadulterated joy. I looked at the man who had bought my debt, destroyed my demons, and captured my heart. "Yes," I choked out, laughing as he slid the ring onto my finger and pulled me down into a sweeping, breathtaking kiss.
