Chapter 7 - The Lion's Den

Six months later, the storm had passed in more ways than one. We had returned to Chicago in secret, biding our time while Antonio’s lawyers built an airtight case against his siblings. Tonight was the night the trap would finally snap shut. It was the annual Russo Foundation Gala, the most exclusive high-society event in the city.

I stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling mirror in our penthouse suite, staring at a stranger. I was wearing a custom-made, emerald-green silk gown that clung perfectly to my curves, my hair styled in elegant waves, and a diamond necklace resting against my collarbone. I looked like I belonged in this world, but as we stepped out of the limousine onto the red carpet, my anxiety spiked. The flashes of a hundred cameras blinded me, and the whispers began immediately.

I heard the venomous sneers from the Chicago elite as we walked through the grand ballroom. “That’s the nurse he bought.” “I give it three months before he gets bored of playing with the help.” “A gold digger in a nice dress is still just a gold digger.”

My grip on Antonio's arm tightened, and I instinctively tried to shrink back into his shadow. But Antonio felt my hesitation. He stopped dead in the center of the ballroom, beneath a massive crystal chandelier. The room went eerily quiet as he turned to face me, completely ignoring the sea of billionaires and socialites watching us.

"Look at me, Sophie," he commanded gently. "They look at you and see my wealth. They don't know that you are the only reason my family is still alive. You are the strongest, bravest woman in this room. You own this space. Do you understand?"

He kissed my forehead, a public declaration of his devotion that sent a shockwave through the crowd. I straightened my spine, lifting my chin. "I understand."

Suddenly, a commotion erupted near the entrance. Marcus and Elena had arrived, smug and arrogant, unaware of the storm about to hit them. But they were immediately intercepted by a team of FBI agents in tactical gear. As the cuffs clicked around their wrists, Antonio raised his champagne glass toward them, a cold, victorious smirk playing on his lips. The sickness in the Russo family had finally been excised.
