Chapter 5 - Escape to Paradise

The transition was a blur of rotor blades, private jets, and heavily armed security details. Within hours, we had vanished from the freezing Chicago winter and landed on the sun-drenched tarmac of a private island in the Caribbean. The estate here was entirely different from the cold stone fortress in the city. It was an open-concept masterpiece of teak wood, white linen, and floor-to-ceiling glass that looked out over the crashing turquoise waves of the ocean. It was beautiful, but it was still a bunker.

Mrs. Russo handled the sudden relocation with the grace of a queen, settling into her tropical suite with a sigh of relief. "The air is better here," she told me with a knowing smile. "And there are fewer snakes in the grass."

For the next few days, it was just the three of us, alongside a skeleton crew of Antonio's most fiercely loyal guards. The isolation forced Antonio and me into constant, unavoidable proximity. I saw him not as a ruthless corporate titan, but as a fiercely protective son. We spent evenings on the expansive wooden deck, watching the sun dip below the horizon. The barriers between employer and employee were rapidly deteriorating, replaced by long conversations about our childhoods, our fears, and the heavy burdens we both carried.

One evening, as I was charting Mrs. Russo's perfect vitals on my tablet, Antonio walked into the room holding a dossier. "The lab results came back," he said, his voice tight. "You were right, Sophie. It was a lethal dose. And my security team traced the payment to the courier back to a shell company owned by Marcus."

I gasped, dropping my tablet onto the sofa. "Your own brother?"

"Half-brother," Antonio corrected bitterly. "My father's mistake. But a mistake I am about to rectify." He looked at me, a profound sense of gratitude and something much deeper swirling in his dark eyes. "You saved her a second time. I owe you a debt I can never repay."

"You don't owe me anything, Antonio," I said softly, using his first name for the very first time. The silence in the room stretched, thick and heavy with unspoken tension, as he took a deliberate step toward me.
