Chapter 10 - The Aftermath

The next few weeks were a whirlwind of police statements, FBI meetings, and court hearings.
Marcus’s empire of lies crumbled instantly.
Evelyn’s ledgers were meticulous. They detailed every single dollar he had stolen and the names of the hitmen he had hired to tamper with her brakes.
He was indicted for first-degree murder, corporate espionage, and embezzlement.
He would never see the outside of a prison cell again.
Through it all, Nathaniel and I stayed at the secluded cabin in Montana.
The media circus in the city was too much for the children.
In the quiet of the mountains, something beautiful began to happen.
Eli started sleeping through the night.
Sophia stopped having nightmares about the angry man with the briefcase.
And Nathaniel started to smile again.
One evening, after the children were asleep, I sat on the porch, wrapped in a thick wool blanket.
The snow was falling softly in the pine trees.
The door creaked open, and Nathaniel stepped out, holding two mugs of hot chocolate.
He handed me one and sat in the rocking chair beside me.
“The lawyers called,” he said softly. “It’s completely finalized. Marcus pled guilty to avoid the death penalty.”
I let out a long breath. “It’s really over.”
“It is.”
He looked out into the dark, snowy woods.
“I never properly thanked you, Clara.”
“You don't need to thank me. You saved my life in that boardroom.”
“You saved my soul in that ballroom,” he corrected gently.

He turned to look at me, his blue eyes intense and warm.
“If you hadn't been so kind, if Sophia hadn't felt comfortable enough to dance in this house… I would have lived the rest of my life in the dark.”
