Chapter 7 - Flight to Nowhere

“Thomas!” I screamed from the back seat. “We need to turn around!”
Thomas looked in the rearview mirror, confused. “Mr. Reed’s orders are to get you to the jet.”
“Marcus knows! He’s going to kill Nathaniel!”
I showed Thomas the text message.
Thomas cursed loudly. He swerved the heavy SUV, tires squealing against the asphalt.
“Call Mr. Reed!” Thomas yelled.
I dialed Nathaniel’s number.
It went straight to voicemail.
I called again. Voicemail.
“He’s in the boardroom,” I said, panic rising in my throat. “They take their phones at the door.”
Thomas gripped the steering wheel. “We are ten minutes from the corporate tower. Hold on to the kids.”
The drive was a blur of blaring horns and swerving traffic.
Eli and Sophia started crying, terrified by the sudden chaos.
“It’s okay, babies, mommy is here,” I soothed them, though my own hands were trembling.
When we pulled up to Reed Enterprises, Thomas didn't park.
He drove the SUV straight onto the pedestrian plaza, stopping inches from the glass revolving doors.
“Stay in the car, lock the doors,” Thomas commanded, pulling a firearm from his shoulder holster.
“No,” I said firmly. “I have the physical ledgers in my bag. The police need this right now.”
I grabbed the heavy notebook.
“Lock the kids in the car. I’m coming with you.”
Thomas hesitated, but saw the fiery determination in my eyes.
“Stay behind me,” he ordered.
We burst into the massive marble lobby.
The security guards tried to stop us, but Thomas flashed his head of security badge.
“Executive override! Elevator 1, now!”
We rushed into the private elevator.
Thomas slammed the button for the 50th floor.

As the numbers ticked up, the silence in the elevator was deafening.
I prayed we weren't too late.
