Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Standoff

The elevator doors chimed and slid open on the 50th floor.

The glass walls of the executive boardroom were visible down the hall.

Inside, chaos had erupted.

Nathaniel was standing at the head of the massive mahogany table.

Marcus was pacing like a caged animal.

The other board members looked terrified.

Thomas and I ran down the hallway.

I pushed the heavy oak doors open just as Marcus pulled a silver handgun from his briefcase.

Screams erupted from the executives.

“Nobody moves!” Marcus roared, pointing the gun directly at Nathaniel’s chest.

Nathaniel didn't flinch.

He stood tall, glaring at the man who had murdered his wife.

“It’s over, Marcus,” Nathaniel said coldly. “The FBI is already raiding your offshore accounts.”

“They have no physical proof!” Marcus spat. “Without Evelyn’s ledger, it’s just numbers on a screen. Unverifiable!”

“Actually,” a voice rang out.

It was me.

Marcus whipped his head toward the door.

I stood there, holding the black leather notebook high in the air.

“Is this what you’re looking for?” I asked.

Marcus’s face contorted in absolute fury.

“You stupid maid,” he hissed.

He swung the gun away from Nathaniel and aimed it straight at me.

Time seemed to slow down.

I saw his finger tighten on the trigger.

I heard someone scream my name.

And then, a massive figure tackled me to the ground.

It was Nathaniel.
