Chapter 12 - The Next Dance

One year later.

The grand mansion was glowing with warm, golden light.

The heavy wooden doors to the east ballroom were propped wide open.

Laughter spilled out into the hallway.

Inside, the room had been transformed.

The dark, heavy drapes were gone, replaced with sheer, flowing silk.

The floor was polished to a mirror shine.

And in the center of the room, near the grand piano, music was playing.

Not the sad, sweeping strings from the old video.

But a bright, joyful waltz.

Sophia, now four years old, was spinning in a new blue dress.

Eli, three and running steadily on his own, was chasing her around the room, laughing hysterically.

I stood in the doorway, watching them, my hand resting on my slightly swelling belly.

Strong arms wrapped around me from behind.

Nathaniel rested his chin on my shoulder.

“They look happy,” he murmured.

“They are,” I smiled, leaning back against his chest.

He kissed my cheek.

“Mrs. Reed,” he whispered. “May I have this dance?”

I turned around and looked at my husband.

“I think you may.”

He took my hand, and we stepped into the ballroom together.

We danced gracefully around our children.

I looked at the grand piano, knowing what secrets it used to hold.

It was no longer a tomb of tragic memories.

It was just a piano again.

Evelyn’s portrait still hung in the hallway, honored and respected. She had saved her son’s life.

But this room now belonged to the living.

To a blended family that had survived the darkness and finally stepped back into the light.

Sophia grabbed Eli’s hands and giggled.

“Feet first, Eli!” she cheered.

Nathaniel spun me around, and we laughed.

The forbidden ballroom wasn't forbidden anymore.

It was home.

The End.
