Chapter 4 - The Ledger of Lies

Elena didn't sleep.

She spent the remaining hours of darkness locked in the tiny en-suite bathroom of her bedroom, the only place without windows where a light wouldn't be noticed from the outside.

She opened the leather ledger. It was a masterpiece of financial tracking. While Tomás thought he was cleverly moving ships and hiding debts through shell companies, her father had been quietly auditing him.

The USB drive was even more damning. She plugged it into her encrypted tablet.

It contained security footage from the estate's old camera system—the one Tomás thought he had uninstalled during the courtyard renovations. The footage showed her mother mixing a white powder into her father’s evening wine, week after week.

Tears finally pricked Elena’s eyes, but she blinked them away fiercely. Grief was a luxury she couldn't afford right now. Anger was much more useful.

She drafted a secure email to Inspector Rafael Sanz, attaching the toxicology report, the ledger photographs, and the video files.

I have the proof, she typed. They plan to force my signature on the trust transfer today. Be ready.

She hit send just as the first rays of dawn began to creep through the cracks in the bathroom door.

At 8:00 AM, a sharp knock echoed through her bedroom.

“Elena?” Tomás’s voice was muffled through the heavy wood. “Mother expects you in the dining room for breakfast. We have a lot of paperwork to go over today.”

“I’ll be right down, Tomás!” she called back, making sure to inject just enough weariness into her voice.

She carefully hid the lockbox contents inside the lining of her suitcase, splashed cold water on her face, and looked at herself in the mirror.

She looked pale, fragile, and broken. Exactly what they wanted to see.

Let them underestimate you, she thought, smoothing down her dress. Let them think they’ve won.

When she descended the stairs, the scent of fresh coffee and pastries filled the air. Her mother was already seated at the head of the long mahogany table, flanked by Tomás and a man Elena had never seen before.

The man was dressed in a sharp suit, carrying a thick leather briefcase.

“Elena, darling,” her mother smiled, gesturing to the empty chair. “This is Mr. Vargas. He’s the notary who will oversee the transfer of the trust.”

Elena took her seat slowly, her eyes flicking to the coffee pot.

“I hope you slept well,” Tomás said, pouring a cup and sliding it toward her.

“Like the dead,” Elena replied quietly.
