Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs

The morning dragged on in an excruciating dance of pleasantries and veiled threats.
They moved to the grand study after breakfast. The heavy oak doors were shut and locked by Tomás, a gesture that was casual in execution but terrifying in implication.
Mr. Vargas laid out the documents on her father’s antique desk.
“It is a simple matter, Miss Marquez,” Vargas explained smoothly, handing her a gold fountain pen. “By signing here, you relinquish your control of the port warehouse trust, rolling its assets directly into the primary holding company managed by your brother.”
“To save the family legacy,” Tomás added, leaning against the bookshelf, trying to project relaxed confidence. “You count receipts, Elena. I move ships. The company needs liquidity to expand. You’ve held this trust hostage long enough.”
Elena remained silent.
She picked up the document and began to read it. Not just skimming, but reading every single line, every legal caveat, every hidden loophole.
“For heaven’s sake, Elena,” her mother snapped, her mask of patience finally cracking. “It’s standard boilerplate. Sign the damn paper.”
“I am a forensic accountant, Mother,” Elena said without looking up. “I don’t sign anything I haven't audited.”
Tomás’s face flushed red. He stepped forward, slamming his hand down on the desk.
“You don't have a choice anymore, little sister. You’ve been away a long time. People talk. They say the grief has made you paranoid. Unstable.”
Elena finally looked up, meeting her brother’s angry gaze.
“Is that so?”
“Yes,” her mother said coldly, rising from her leather armchair. “We’ve tried to handle this internally, out of love. But your erratic behavior, your refusal to support the family... it’s clear you aren't in your right mind.”
Right on cue, there was a heavy knock at the study door.
Tomás walked over and unlocked it. A tall, severe-looking man walked in, carrying a vintage leather medical bag.
“Ah, Dr. Silva,” her mother said warmly. “Thank you for coming so quickly.”
Elena felt her heartbeat thunder in her chest. Your brother has a doctor ready to declare you unstable. They need your trustee seal before midnight.
The trap was fully sprung.
“Elena,” Tomás said, his voice dropping into a tone of false sympathy. “Dr. Silva is here to evaluate you. If you won't sign the transfer willingly, he will sign an affidavit declaring you mentally unfit to manage the trust. I will become your legal conservator.”

“You would lock your own sister in a psychiatric ward for a warehouse?” Elena asked, her voice trembling—this time, on purpose.
“We’ll protect you from yourself,” Tomás replied softly.
