Chapter 7 - Checkmate

My brother smiled as the doctor opened his medical bag wider, preparing to put the sedative away.

“Good girl,” Tomás mocked.

“Sign the transfer, Elena, or we’ll protect you from yourself,” Elena repeated his earlier words softly, her voice no longer trembling. The fragility was gone, replaced by a spine of absolute steel.

My mother stood behind him, watching as if she had already attended my funeral. She looked impatient, eager to take the documents and run.

I placed my signature on the final page, slowly pushed the stack of papers toward the center of the desk, and whispered, “Read the clause beneath it.”

Tomás frowned, his smile faltering. He snatched the document and looked at the fine print just above her signature.

“What is this?” he demanded, his face draining of color.

“It’s a contingency clause,” Elena explained calmly, folding her hands in front of her. “I added it to the trust charter three months ago, anticipating you might try something like this. It states that if my signature is ever applied in the presence of a medical professional, or under threat of conservatorship, the entire trust is immediately liquidated and its assets surrendered to the State Financial Crimes Authority pending a criminal investigation.”

“You bitch!” Tomás roared, lunging forward.

Before he could reach her, the sound of screeching tires tore through the quiet estate.

Red and blue police lights violently flooded the large windows of the study, casting manic, swirling shadows across the faces of her family.

My brother’s smile vanished completely.

But he still didn’t know what I had found upstairs.

The heavy oak doors of the study burst open. Four armed police officers stormed into the room, followed by a tall, sharp-eyed man in a trench coat.

“Inspector Rafael Sanz,” the man announced, flashing a badge. “Nobody move.”

“What is the meaning of this?!” her mother shrieked, playing the outraged matriarch. “This is a private residence! Get out of my house!”

“Tomás Marquez,” Inspector Sanz said, ignoring the screaming woman and pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for grand financial fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy.”

“You have nothing on me!” Tomás shouted, backing away until he hit the bookshelves.

“And,” Sanz continued, turning his icy gaze to Elena's mother, “Isabella Marquez. You are under arrest for the murder of Alejandro Marquez.”

The room went dead silent. The syringe dropped from Dr. Silva’s hand, shattering on the hardwood floor.
