Chapter 8 - A New Empire

The courtyard was beautiful in the afternoon light.

It had been six months since the arrests. Tomás and her mother had been denied bail. The toxicology report, the ledgers hidden in the kitchen wall, and the security footage had been a watertight trifecta. The scandal had shaken the country, but the Marquez shipping empire had survived.

Elena stood on the stone patio, looking at the newly restored outdoor garden space.

She had hired a team of genuine architects to rip out Tomás's shoddy, panic-driven layout modifications. The load-bearing walls had been fixed, the modern hardware removed, and the traditional Spanish aesthetics her father had loved were painstakingly restored.

She had not abandoned her family's legacy. She had simply cleansed it.

Inspector Sanz walked out onto the patio, holding a folder.

“The judge finalized the asset forfeiture today,” Sanz said, standing beside her. “Your brother's shares have been absorbed by the trust. You are now the sole owner of the Marquez Shipping Corporation.”

Elena took the folder, feeling the weight of the paper in her hands.

“And the trial?” she asked.

“Your mother is trying to make a plea deal. She’s blaming everything on Tomás, claiming he forced her to poison the wine to cover his debts.” Sanz shook his head. “There is no loyalty among thieves.”

“There never was,” Elena murmured.

She looked out over the cliff, watching a massive cargo ship with the Marquez logo slowly cutting through the deep blue waters of the Mediterranean.

Tomás had mocked her for counting receipts. He believed power was in moving ships, in loud boasts and aggressive posturing. He had failed to understand that true power lay in the details. In the missing decimals, the uneven paneling, the quiet observation of a daughter who was always watching.

“Will you stay here?” Sanz asked gently. “In the house?”

Elena looked back at the sprawling stone mansion. It no longer felt like a tomb. It felt like a fortress. Her fortress.

“Yes,” Elena said, a genuine smile finally touching her lips. “I have a lot of remodeling left to do.”
