Chapter 10 - The Hammer Of Justice And The Frozen Assets

Judge Sarah Reynolds was a notoriously strict family court jurist with zero tolerance for deadbeat parents and financial deceit.

She adjusted her reading glasses atop her graying hair as she looked down from the elevated mahogany bench.

The courtroom was dead silent except for the rapid clicking of the court stenographer’s machine.

On our side of the aisle sat Barbara’s lead litigator, Arthur Pendelton, who laid three heavy black binders across the counsel table.

On the opposite side, Eric sat slumped beside his trembling appointed attorney, wringing his hands beneath the desk.

"We are here on an emergency ex-parte motion filed by petitioner Maya Vance," Judge Reynolds began in a booming, no-nonsense tone.

"The petitioner requests immediate, sole physical and legal custody of the minor child, Chloe Vance, born four days ago."

"She also petitions for an immediate emergency restraining order and a complete financial freeze against respondent Eric Vance."

Eric’s lawyer stood up hastily, clearing his throat.

"Your Honor, my client was not given adequate time to prepare a proper defense—"

"Counsel, sit down," Judge Reynolds cut him off with a sharp flick of her hand.

"I have reviewed the certified filings submitted by Vance Heritage Properties and the pediatric intensive care unit records."

The judge lifted a sheet of paper and looked directly at Eric, her eyes burning with pure judicial disdain.

"Mr. Vance, is it true that your newborn infant was admitted to the NICU with acute respiratory distress syndrome?"

"Your Honor... there was a misunderstanding—" Eric stammered, rising halfway out of his chair.

"Answer the question with a yes or a no, Mr. Vance!" the judge slammed her gavel down with a sharp crack that echoed off the high ceilings.

"Yes, Your Honor," Eric squeaked, shrinking back into his seat.

"And is it true that forty-eight hours after her discharge, you refused to provide financial support or allow the mother to enter your residence to obtain funds for life-saving nebulizers?"

Eric opened his mouth, but Arthur Pendelton stood up and tapped a digital tablet connected to the courtroom display monitors.

A clear, high-definition security camera recording filled the large screen mounted on the courtroom wall.

It was the exterior ring-camera footage from the Oakwood Drive estate from yesterday morning.

The video showed me standing on the porch, pale and shivering, holding Chloe’s carrier while my shirt was visibly stained with post-operative discharge.

The audio came through crystal clear in the courtroom:

"Eric, your baby mama’s here looking for another handout!" Vanessa’s voice sneered from the speakers.

Then Eric’s voice rang out, cold, brutal, and utterly damning:

"I have a life now. Stop showing up with your little brat."

"She’s your responsibility and your problem. Ask someone who cares. Definitely not me."

The entire courtroom gasped in collective horror.

Even Eric’s own appointed attorney buried his face in his hands, knowing there was no possible defense for the recorded evidence.

Judge Reynolds removed her glasses, her face turning a deep, dangerous shade of crimson.

"In my twenty-two years on the municipal bench, I have rarely witnessed such callous, subhuman disregard for an infant child."

She reached for her pen and began signing the orders with violent, decisive strokes.

"Full physical and legal custody of Chloe Vance is awarded exclusively to Maya Vance, effective immediately."

"A permanent restraining order is hereby entered: Mr. Vance is prohibited from coming within one thousand yards of the mother, the child, their residence, and any medical facility treating the minor."

"Visitation is denied in perpetuity until a comprehensive forensic psychiatric evaluation and supervised rehabilitation are completed at respondent's sole expense."

"Furthermore, based on the prima facie evidence of grand larceny and fraudulent asset transfer submitted by corporate counsel..."

Judge Reynolds looked up, her gaze pinning Eric to his chair like an insect on a specimen board.

"All domestic and foreign bank accounts under the name of Eric Vance and Vance Strategic Holdings are frozen indefinitely."

"A formal referral for criminal prosecution under felony child endangerment and fraudulent conveyance statutes is hereby directed to the State Attorney General’s office."

"Sheriff's deputies, take the respondent into immediate custody for outstanding failure-to-appear warrants regarding unauthorized corporate liquidations."

Two armed bailiffs immediately stepped behind Eric’s chair.

The cold steel handcuffs clicked shut around Eric’s wrists with a finality that shook him to his core.

"Mother! Maya! Please don't let them take me to jail!" Eric screamed, kicking and thrashing as the bailiffs dragged him toward the holding cells.

"I’m sorry! I’ll pay the money back! I swear I’ll pay it back!"

His desperate shrieks faded down the back corridor as the heavy steel holding cell doors slammed shut.

Barbara Vance stood up, smoothed the front of her tailored jacket, and turned to me with a faint, victorious smile.

"Come along, Maya," she said softly, wrapping an arm around my shoulder.
