Chapter 12 - The Transformation In The Boardroom

Six months passed, bringing a complete rebirth to the estate on the north side of the river.
Under the specialized care paid for by Barbara Vance, Chloe had blossomed into a healthy, giggling infant with bright blue eyes and rosy cheeks.
Her lungs had fully healed, leaving no lasting scar from the terrifying days she spent in the neonatal intensive care unit.
Every morning, her nursery was filled with sunshine and the soft hum of classical music that Barbara loved to play.
I, too, had completely transformed.
The exhausted, defeated mother who had once wept on a suburban doorstep was gone forever.
Barbara had refused to let me remain a passive bystander to our family’s enterprise.
She enrolled me in an executive leadership program and had her top financial analysts train me in commercial real estate management.
I discovered that the business acumen I had used to manage mid-level corporate teams was easily adapted to larger scales.
On a crisp Monday morning, I walked through the double glass doors of the Vance Heritage Properties headquarters.
I wore a tailored emerald blazer, black slacks, and gold pearl earrings that Barbara had gifted me for my thirty-first birthday.
The receptionists and junior executives bowed their heads in respectful greeting as I walked toward the executive boardroom.
Around the large mahogany conference table sat the company's major stakeholders, including several city council representatives and commercial developers.
Barbara sat at the head of the table, looking radiant and authoritative.
She gestured for me to take the seat directly to her right, which had formerly belonged to Eric before his downfall.
"Good morning, gentlemen and board members," Barbara announced, her commanding voice instantly silencing the room.
"Today marks the official restructuring of our commercial development division."
"As you all know, the former director engaged in unethical and criminal practices that jeopardized our corporate integrity."
"Those liabilities have been completely excised by the state courts."
She turned her proud gaze toward me and placed her hand over mine.
"Effective immediately, Maya Vance is appointed as the Chief Operating Officer of Vance Heritage Properties."
"She has overseen the complete forensic recovery of all misdirected assets over the past quarter."
"She will hold the sole voting power for our upcoming forty-million-dollar mixed-use municipal project."
The room erupted into polite, sincere applause from the board members who had witnessed our firm’s steady revival.
Just as the meeting was concluding, the boardroom doors swung open, and Arthur Pendelton stepped inside carrying an official court packet.
"Pardon the interruption, Mrs. Vance," Arthur said, addressing me with formal deference.
"The State District Attorney has just concluded the final sentencing hearing for Eric Vance."

"Judge Reynolds has delivered the verdict."
The entire boardroom fell dead silent as Arthur stepped forward and placed the stamped judicial order on the table before us.
