Chapter 4 - The Living Room Conspiracy And The Hidden Deeds

Within two hours, Barbara had transported Chloe and me to her sprawling suburban estate on the north side of the river.

Her house was immaculate, filled with mahogany antiques, Persian rugs, and the quiet dignity of old wealth.

A pediatric nurse whom Barbara had hired through a private concierge service was already waiting in the guest wing.

The nurse immediately set up a medical-grade oxygen concentrator and administered Chloe’s nebulizer solution with expert ease.

For the first time in ninety-six hours, Chloe’s breathing stabilized into a calm, gentle rhythm.

She fell asleep under the soft glow of a nursery lamp, completely safe from the elements.

Meanwhile, I sat in Barbara’s study, wrapped in a cashmere blanket with a plate of warm broth before me.

The physical exhaustion hit me in crushing waves, but Barbara sat opposite me across a massive oak desk, wide awake.

She opened a thick manila folder and spread several legal documents across the polished wood.

"You think Eric bought that house on Oakwood Drive with his own commissions, don't you?" Barbara began, her voice chillingly calm.

"He told me he made partner at his commercial brokerage firm," I replied, holding the warm mug with both hands.

Barbara let out a dry, scornful laugh that rattled the crystal decanters on the side table.

"Eric hasn't closed a legitimate commercial deal in fourteen months."

"He came to me six months ago on his hands and knees, begging for an advance against his future trust fund."

"He claimed he was launching a high-yield property syndicate that would secure your family's future forever."

"I agreed to guarantee the lease on the Oakwood estate through my property holding company, Vance Heritage Properties."

"I also transferred ownership of the company luxury lease car into his business account under strict probationary terms."

"Every single luxury he is flashing in front of that gold-digging girl is held by my corporate umbrella."

My eyes widened as the realization slowly dawned on me.

"He doesn't own any of it?"

"Not the roof over their heads, not the leather seats in his convertible, and certainly not the social standing he flaunts at the country club," Barbara said, leaning forward.

"When he stole your seventy thousand dollars, he committed grand larceny against a marital estate."

"When he abandoned his sick newborn in a medical crisis, he violated basic human decency."

"No man gets to humiliate the woman who carried his child and call his own daughter a burden under my name."

She tapped a long, manicured finger against a set of freshly printed legal notices.

"I called my chief corporate counsel while you were inside the pharmacy."

"We have drafted three immediate actions that will strip the foundation out from beneath his feet."

"First, an immediate notice of lease revocation and eviction for the Oakwood property due to unauthorized subleasing and moral turpitude clauses."

"Second, a repossession order for the corporate vehicle."

"Third, a criminal complaint filed directly with the district attorney's financial crimes unit regarding the unauthorized liquidation of marital accounts prior to divorce filing."

I looked at Barbara, feeling a strange mixture of awe and terror.

"What about Vanessa?" I asked.

"Vanessa Kane’s father relies on my firm for his suburban zoning permits," Barbara replied with an icy, calculated smile.

"He will know by sunrise exactly what kind of predatory vermin his daughter is harboring."

"Now, drink your broth and get some rest. At dawn, we are going to pay my son a very personal visit."
