Chapter 11 - The County Lockup And The Solitary Reality Check

The heavy iron door of the holding cell slammed shut with a concussive boom that reverberated through the marrow of Eric’s bones.
He stood paralyzed on the damp, stained concrete floor of the county intake processing center.
The expensive designer suit he had worn to court was stripped away and replaced with a scratchy, oversized orange jumpsuit.
The pungent stench of industrial disinfectant and stale sweat burned his nostrils.
Across the cell, three hardened men stared at him with cold, predatory curiosity.
"Look what we got here," one of them rasped, running a tattooed hand across his shaved head. "A little silver-spoon boy who forgot how to pay his bills."
Eric backed slowly into the corner, pressing his spine against the freezing, peeling cinderblock wall.
His wrists were bruised and throbbing from the tight steel cuffs the bailiff had clamped on him two hours earlier.
For the first time in his pampered life, no executive assistant picked up the phone to solve his problems.
No credit card limit was waiting to bail him out of the consequences of his own hubris.
When the guard finally called his name for his allotted five-minute outgoing telephone call, Eric sprinted to the scratched acrylic partition.
His fingers shook violently as he punched in the only number he knew by heart: Vanessa’s private cell line.
The call connected after four excruciating rings, and he let out a frantic sob of relief.
"Vanessa! Baby, thank God you answered! You have to call your father’s attorneys right now!"
"Eric?" Vanessa’s voice sounded sharp, detached, and utterly cold.
"I’m in the county jail, Vanessa! They froze all my accounts and hit me with felony grand larceny!"
"You have to post the fifty-thousand-dollar bond! You still have the access codes to the offshore crypto account!"
There was a brief, sharp laugh on the other end that cut Eric to the quick.
"Are you completely insane, Eric?" Vanessa sneered, her voice dripping with venom.
"My father took away my sports car and froze my personal accounts because of your pathetic scam."
"The police detectives came to our apartment twenty minutes ago with a search warrant."
"They confiscated all the jewelry, the designer bags, and the watches you bought with that stolen money."
"They’re classifying everything as proceeds of criminal fraud!"
Eric’s breath hitched in his chest as panic constricted his throat like a tightening noose.
"Vanessa, please! I gave up my marriage for you! I left everything behind for you!"
"You gave up a woman who was too stupid to realize you were a penniless loser, Eric."
"My father’s lawyers are currently drafting an affidavit stating that I was an unwitting victim of your financial scheme."
"Don't ever call this number again, or I’ll add a harassment charge to your little collection."
The call disconnected with a hollow beep.
Eric slammed the plastic receiver against the wall until the guard yanked him back by the collar of his jumpsuit.
He was thrown back onto the cold bench of the holding pen, curling into a ball as reality finally crashed down upon him.

He had gambled his family, his dignity, and his freedom for an illusion of grandeur.
Now, he had absolutely nothing left except the cold metal bars of his cell.
