Chapter 4 - The Descent

I walked slowly up the stairs, each step deliberate and silent against the plush carpeting, ascending toward the master bedroom like an executioner walking to the scaffold. The closer I got, the louder their voices became. I could hear Victoria's breathy sighs and David's contented murmurs, words of affection and intimacy tossed around like cheap currency. They were resting now, wrapped in the tangled sheets of the bed I had chosen, under the artwork I had framed, surrounded by the life I had nurtured and sustained through years of emotional drought. My hand rested protectively over my flat stomach, feeling the fierce pulse of life inside me. This house, this marriage, this entire illusion was built on a foundation of sand, and the tide was about to come in.

I stopped directly outside the master bedroom door. It stood ajar by a few inches, just enough to offer a sliver of the scene inside. Through the crack, I saw the discarded clothes trailing across the carpet. I saw the silhouette of two bodies resting against the headboard, bathed in the golden afternoon sunlight filtering through the sheer curtains. David looked relaxed, his face flushed with the afterglow of his betrayal, laughing softly as Victoria traced a finger down his chest. They looked like a picture of domestic bliss—if you ignored the fact that they were squatting on someone else's kingdom. I didn't storm in screaming. I didn't kick the door off its hinges. Instead, I raised my hand and pushed the door wide open with a sharp, echoing shove that slammed it against the wall.

The sound shattered the lazy, sensual atmosphere of the room like a gunshot. David bolted upright, the color draining instantly from his face as his eyes locked onto mine. Victoria gasped, scrambling frantically to pull the sheet over her bare shoulders, her expression shifting from lazy contentment to sheer, unadulterated panic. For three agonizing seconds, the room was suspended in a vacuum of absolute silence. David opened his mouth, but no words came out. His lips parted, his eyes darted from my face down to the white envelope in my hand, and then back to my eyes, where he found no tears, no pleading, and no broken heart—only a cold, unblinking storm.

"Elena..." David finally managed to choke out, his voice cracking with a pathetic mix of fear and disbelief. "Elena, wait. It's... it's not what you think. Let me explain."
