Chapter 5 - The Unraveling of Lies

The desperation in David's voice was almost pathetic, a stark contrast to the arrogant laughter that had echoed down the stairs just moments before. He scrambled out of the bed, abandoning the tangled sheets and the cowering woman behind him, standing there exposed in every sense of the word. He tried to take a step toward me, his hands raised in a placating gesture, his face contorted into a mask of frantic innocence. "Baby, please. Just listen to me. Victoria and I... it was a mistake. It didn't mean anything. We can talk about this, okay? Just put the envelope down and talk to me." He looked terrified, not because he had broken my heart, but because he realized his comfortable, double-sided life was collapsing around his ears.

I didn't flinch. I didn't step back. I simply looked at the man I had dedicated seven years of my youth to, wondering how I had ever loved the stranger standing in front of me. "A mistake, David?" My voice was calm, cutting through the heavy air of the bedroom with surgical precision. "Dropping your keys in the foyer is a mistake. Leaving your shirt by the door is a mistake. Bringing another woman into our bed, sleeping with her in the home we built together—that isn't a mistake. That's a choice. A deliberate, calculated, arrogant choice." I took one slow step into the room, my eyes shifting to Victoria, who was still clutching the sheet tightly to her chest, glaring at me with a mixture of hostility and fear.

"And who is this?" I asked, my tone dripping with icy detachment. "Ah, let me guess. Victoria. The brilliant junior executive from marketing who helps you burn through our joint savings account to pay for her luxury apartment downtown. Am I close?" Victoria flinched, her eyes widening as she realized I knew far more than just her name. David froze mid-stride, his face turning an alarming shade of pale grey. "How... how do you know that?" he stammered, the last remnants of his composure shattering completely. He looked at me as if I were a ghost, or a stranger wearing his wife's face. He had expected me to weep, to scream, to throw things. He had never expected to encounter a woman who was three steps ahead of him before he even realized the game had begun.
