Chapter 5 - UNMASKING THE PARASITES

When the financial safety net vanishes, family loyalty turns out to be nothing more than a myth.

The dining room erupted into chaos.

The two uncles stood up so fast their chairs scraped harshly against the hardwood floor. Cousin Chloe was trembling, staring at her phone screen as if it were a venomous snake. The illusion of unshakeable Mercer wealth had evaporated in less than thirty seconds, revealing the rotting, debt-ridden core underneath.

"Daniel! Is this true?" Uncle Arthur bellowed, slamming his palm onto the mahogany table. "Have we been living off her money this entire time while you sat around playing CEO?"

"We thought the estate was finally generating dividends!" Cousin Marcus shouted, pointing an accusing finger at Daniel. "You told us the real estate investments had bounced back! You told us we were safe!"

Daniel looked up, his face pale, sweat dripping down his temples. He looked pathetic—a spoiled, weak-willed boy caught in a web of his own lies and cowardice. He couldn't meet anyone's gaze. He simply looked at me, his eyes pleading for mercy.

"Emma... please," Daniel whispered, his voice cracking. "Don't ruin us completely. We can talk about this. In private. Just... reinstate the accounts. Please."

I let out a cold, humorless laugh. "In private? Like how you forced me to my knees in private? Like how your mother humiliated me just minutes ago while you stood there and watched?"

Vivian’s face contorted with rage and sheer terror. The mask of polite aristocracy was completely gone, replaced by a desperate, cornered animal. She rushed forward, her designer heels clicking frantically against the floor, stopping just inches away from me.

"You ungrateful, manipulative bitch!" Vivian shrieked, raising her hand as if to strike me across the face. "You think you can come into our home and destroy us? I will ruin you! I will make sure you never work another day in your life! I'll destroy your reputation!"

Before her hand could even complete half its arc, I caught her wrist with a firm, unbreakable grip. Years of dealing with ruthless corporate executives and hostile boardrooms had taught me one thing: never flinch when a bully loses control.

I squeezed her wrist just enough to make her wince, staring coldly into her panicked eyes.

"Try it, Vivian," I whispered softly, leaning in close so only she could hear. "If you file a single complaint, or if you ever touch me again, I won't just freeze your credit cards. I will immediately file the foreclosure papers on this exact mansion, repossess every single car parked in the driveway, and hand over the complete ledger of your late husband's fraudulent bankruptcy filings directly to the federal prosecutors."

Vivian froze. The color completely drained from her face, leaving her looking old, frail, and utterly defeated. Her arm went limp in my grip, and she stumbled backward, catching herself against the edge of the dining table.
