Chapter 7 - A NEW BALANCE SHEET

True power doesn't come from a title on a wedding ring; it comes from knowing your own worth.
Three weeks had passed since that fateful night, and the fallout had been nothing short of catastrophic for the Mercer household.
Without my financial intervention, the creditors didn't wait. Within forty-eight hours of my departure, foreclosure notices were plastered across the grand iron gates of the Mercer mansion. The luxury vehicles parked in the driveway were repossessed by the banks one by one, towed away in broad daylight while the neighbors watched from their windows.
Vivian’s high-society friends quickly abandoned her the moment her black cards were declined and her country club memberships were revoked for non-payment. Stripped of their artificial wealth, the family discovered that none of them actually knew how to earn a living. The uncles were forced to scramble for low-level jobs, while Chloe had to move into a tiny, cramped studio apartment downtown.
As for Daniel, he had tried calling me dozens of times. At first, his voicemails were filled with desperate pleas, begging me to come back, claiming he would stand up to his mother, promising things would change. When those failed, his messages turned angry, filled with empty threats of abandonment and legal action.
I blocked his number on day one.
Sitting in my corner office on the top floor of downtown's premier financial consulting tower, I looked out the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows at the glittering skyline. My laptop sat open on my desk, displaying a clean, profitable portfolio—one that belonged entirely to me, managed entirely for my own future.

My corporate career was thriving better than ever. I had just closed a major multi-million-dollar restructuring deal for an international tech firm, earning a massive bonus that far exceeded anything I had ever wasted on the Mercer family.
My knees still held a faint, dull bruise from the cold marble floor, but every time I looked at it, I didn't feel pain or humiliation. I felt power. That single fall had been the catalyst that woke me up from a toxic, one-sided nightmare and forced me to reclaim my life.
