Chapter 7 - The Ultimatum

Nora was furious when I told her about the conservatorship threat.
"It's a classic intimidation tactic," she said, pacing her office. "They want to drain your trust through legal fees until you settle."
"Can they win?" I asked.
"Not with me defending you," Nora promised fiercely. "But it will be ugly. They will drag your entire childhood into the public record."
Julian entered the room, carrying a fresh stack of files.
"I checked the court dockets," he said. "Your father's lawyers just filed an emergency injunction to freeze your trust assets."
"We need to strike back," Nora said. "Now."
"I have an idea," I said, looking at Julian. "But I need to talk to Paige first."
"Grant's girlfriend?" Julian asked, confused. "Why?"
"Because she's the weakest link in their armor," I explained. "She loves money, and right now, Grant doesn't have any."
Julian found her location through her social media. She was at a high-end salon downtown.
I walked into the salon an hour later. Paige was getting a manicure, complaining to the technician.
"Paige," I said, standing over her.
She jumped. "Evelyn? What are you doing here? Grant said you went crazy."
"I need to talk to you in private," I demanded.
"I'm busy," she huffed, inspecting her nails.
"I know Grant hasn't paid rent on your luxury condo in two months," I whispered loudly enough for only her to hear.
Paige's face froze. She stood up and followed me to a quiet corner.
"What do you want?" she hissed.
"I want you to leave Grant," I said plainly. "And I want you to give me the ledger he keeps in his home safe."
"You're insane," she scoffed.
"He's going down for a four-million-dollar fraud scheme, Paige," I told her. "My father set him up. When the FBI raids your condo, they'll seize your jewelry too."
Her eyes widened in horror.
"Get me the ledger," I offered. "And I will give you a cashier's check for twenty thousand dollars. Enough for you to disappear before the blast radius hits you."
May you like
Paige swallowed hard.
"Have the check ready by tonight," she whispered.
