Chapter 9 - The House of Cards

They dropped the petition that afternoon.

But Julian knew it wasn't over.

"He's panicking," Julian said as we walked through the park near my apartment. "The audit for his company is in five days. If he doesn't have the money, he goes to prison."

"What will he do?" I asked, pulling my coat tighter against the wind.

"Desperate people do desperate things," Julian warned. "He might try to flee the country."

My phone rang. It was Grant.

I hesitated, then answered.

"Evie," Grant's voice was frantic. "Paige left me. She took everything. Even my grandmother's bracelet."

"I know," I said.

"You know?" Grant yelled. "Did you do this?"

"I bought the ledger, Grant," I said softly. "The one Dad was using to pay you off."

There was dead silence on the line.

"Grant, listen to me," I pleaded. "Dad used your name for Apex Holdings. You are the registered owner of his fraud scheme. He set you up to take the fall."

"You're lying," Grant whispered, but I could hear the doubt in his voice.

"Why else would he give you cash under the table?" I asked. "He's going to run, Grant. And he's going to leave you holding the bag."

"Oh my god," Grant choked out.

"Meet me at Nora's office tomorrow at noon," I said. "Bring Dad and Mom. We end this."

I hung up before he could argue.

Julian stopped walking and looked at me. "You're calling a family meeting?"

"I have the power now," I said. "It's time I used it."

He smiled, a genuine, warm smile that made my stomach flutter.

May you like

"Your grandfather would be very proud of you," Julian said.

"I hope so," I replied.
