Chapter 8 - The Deposition

The next morning, we met at the courthouse for the preliminary deposition regarding my trust.
My father sat across the polished table, exuding confidence. His expensive lawyer, a shark named Harrison, sat beside him.
Nora sat next to me. Julian sat directly behind me, a silent pillar of support.
"Evelyn has exhibited erratic behavior," Harrison began smoothly. "Isolating herself, stealing family documents, and making paranoid accusations."
"My client is completely lucid," Nora countered. "She merely exercised her legal right to her inheritance."
"By locking it away from her loving family?" my father interjected, shaking his head with fake sorrow. "Evie, sweetheart, we just want to get you the help you need."
I felt a surge of nausea at his tone.
"Mr. Kingsley," Nora said sharply. "Isn't it true that you requested a three-million-dollar loan from Evelyn on the night of her birthday?"
"I asked if she wanted to invest in the family business," my father lied smoothly. "She became hysterical."
I pulled a piece of paper from my folder and slid it across the table.
It was a copy of the ledger Paige had given me last night. It detailed Grant's loan shark debts, but more importantly, it showed regular cash deposits from my father to Grant to keep him quiet.
My father looked at the paper. His fake smile vanished.
"Where did you get this?" he demanded, his voice dropping an octave.
"It doesn't matter," Nora said. "What matters is that you are desperately broke, Arthur. And you are trying to steal your daughter's money to save your own skin."
"This is inadmissible," Harrison barked, snatching the paper. "This has nothing to do with her mental competence."
"It proves motive," Nora smiled. "Drop the conservatorship petition, Arthur. Or we submit this to the judge."
My father glared at me with pure hatred.
"You think you're so smart," he hissed.
May you like
"I think I'm safe," I replied, holding his gaze.
He stood up abruptly. "We're done here."
